I caught the documentary about the abduction of Elizabeth Smart by a particularly fucked up god-botherer pedophile back in 2002.
It clearly illustrated how useless the police are for the job the public thinks they are supposed to perform: protecting the public.
They wasted days looking at male family members because "it's usually family." They dismissed evidence as appearing staged. Then they glommed on to a guy who'd done some contracting work for the family because he had a record. And they put him through the ringer with no evidence, convinced it was him. He died in custody of either a stroke or heart attack.
Elizabeth's sister was in the room with her when the abduction happened, nine years old at the time. She heard the man's voice. It took her a while but it suddenly it came to her whose voice it was. She told her parents, who told the police. The cops got a sketch artist to draw the guy but then sat on it and didn't release it to the public mainly because they couldn't find a little girl's certain identification of the perp credible. The family finally had enough, released the sketch themselves, and eventually got Elizabeth back.
The cops were all but useless. Gave bad information. Didn't do their due diligence. Just assumed they knew better than everyone what happened, and acted accordingly.
Cops aren't there for us. They are there to protect the status quo. And the status quo doesn't really give a shit about women and girls. Especially if they're people of color. Elizabeth Smart was a white Mormon girl and even her case got screwed up by complacent and incompetent cops. The fact that they do even less for black, brown and indigenous folks should be a surprise to no one.
They don't do anything productive when needed, so what are they there for? I ask facetiously; they need to be abolished.

"There will be victims and survivors who watch this, and I hope they realize they’re not alone, and that they don’t have to be ashamed of what happened to them. And I hope that people who watch this can gain compassion and understanding for other families who are going through this. I also hope it brings comfort that there are happy endings — and that even after terrible things happen, you can still have a wonderful life." -Elizabeth Smart
