I would cuddle these horses to promote my amazing Valentine day plan (💔), but well, I am scared of horses… 🤫

But they are really cute 😊

Two Icelandic horses, one brow-white, other brow. The photo captures their faces, close together. In the background, the sea.

For posting this featured photo on my iPad, I would normally use the hashtag landscape photography, but an annoying little guy is messing up the photo. 🤭

September 2019

Locational Iceland with many stacks of stones in the front, in the back a glacier.
Near one of the stacks, a little Bert (SesameStreet) is lifting a rock.

My iPad reminded me of our massive 😉 solar ☀️ eclipse in the Netherlands in March 2025.

Yes, this is the sun. You’d probably believed me too if I had said that this is the moon.

The silhouet of branches of a tree, with a dark cloudy background. The clouds have some colours vaguely in them. And behind the clouds a moon-like sun. Cookie Monster ate a bite out of it. And if you read the alt text, please reply with an image of Cookie Monster, that would be fun.

I don’t have a cat, so here is something else fluffy for this Caturday…

December 2022

For some reason, the Featured Photos function on my iPad just keeps showing two photos this time. So…

Ducks!!! 😂🥰

In , October 2024.

You’d probably guessed, ducks. Three in a orange-yellowish grassy landscape, with small waters which reflect the blue sky. And in one of the puddles, there are three ducks.

Iceland, boats near Stykkishólmur in March 2020.

For some reason, the beautiful town did not resonate with me. So I have to give it a second chance.

Which is by the way also an excuse to go again…and again….and again… Right? 😇

Two white boats, one needs some paint, on dry land, next to the water, visible in the back. Snow is on the ground and the mountains in the back, behind the water.

Then use the #petapixel hashtag in your posts to join our Instagram community of photographers. These steps let us easily find what to share.

Below, we recognize a selection of talented photographers who recently had their work featured on @PetaPixel. Keep posting your images with # petapixel and you could find yourself here next week.

Pedro Moreira, found on Instagram as @pedroxmoreira, is a self-taught photographer based in Portugal. Moreira has had his work published on covers, in books, and circulated through newspapers and magazines. On this photo of a sculpture that pays homage to shipwrecked fisherman Vila do Conde, Moreira noticed “the long and dense shadows created a dramatic effect” to his liking. “Despite having only my mobile phone, I got the photo in which even the sun's flare on the lens created a surprising visual effect,” he said.

Mark Andre is an architectural designer and landscape photographer based in Washington, D.C. whose work can be seen on Instagram as @markalanandre. Andre said that his background as an architect “heavily influences the clear structure” of his photography.

Fabio Mirulla, or @fabiomirullaphotographer on Instagram, is a wedding photographer and Canon Ambassador based in Tuscany.“This photo is part of an amazing wedding that I loved to shoot since the first moment,” he told PetaPixel. “Great couples give me the chance to do one of the things that I love about my work, experimenting, that's what happened during this shoot thanks also to a great friend of mine.” Mirulla used the Canon EOS R5 and 35mm f/1.4L II to capture this image.

Tom Shlesinger, known as @tom_shlesinger on Instagram, is an underwater photographer and marine ecologist (Ph.D.) who studies coral-reef ecosystems. Shlesinger has been diving since he was six years old and is fascinated with the diversity of lifeforms in the sea and their function, behavior, colors, shapes, and patterns. This particular image titled “Goliath in Lilliput” shows a Goliath grouper surrounded by cigar minnows. “To give a sense of movement, I used a relatively long exposure, creating motion blur, and waited for a Goliath to ‘emerge’ out of the school,” Shlesinger said.

“Decades ago, following severe population declines of the Atlantic Goliath grouper, its fishing in Florida, where they aggregate to reproduce, got banned. Now, there are new plans to allow its fishing and, hopefully, such decisions will not put the groupers’ future in danger once again.”

Damian Shields specializes in images of his home Scottish landscape and can be found on Instagram as @damianshieldsdotcom. Telling the story of this photo “Loch Rusky,” Shields told PetaPixel he was driving across the backroads of the Trossachs region. “I became increasingly transfixed by the thick mist that had begun to envelop the land around me, especially the passing woodland's transformation into otherworldly scenes of atmospheric intrigue. Pulling over and grabbing my camera bag, I ventured down to the banks of the little loch where I spied this gently curving pine branch dipped to the surface of the serene waters as if to take a sip. The silent pines standing tall in the receding fog completed the composition.”

When not out shooting the landscape, he is deputy picture editor for The Herald & Times group in Glasgow.

On this particular photo, he said that it was taken at a nature reserve that he has visited since he was young. “I was aware there was a nesting pair of barn owls in this tree but also knew they were very nocturnal,” Broxup said. “A clear evening following a few days of rain means that the owls will be hungry as they struggle to hunt in the rain due to their feathers not being waterproof.” As an experienced wildlife photographer, Broxup chooses to wait until the first evening or early morning after the rain stops. “In this case, the two young owls came to the edge of the tree hollow to call for the adults to bring them some much-needed food just as the last rays of the day's sun pushed through the clouds.”

Pedro Lopez, or @pdromi_fotografia on Instagram, is a portrait photographer based in Chile. From what I understand, Lopez’s model is not a professional and makes this photo all the better. I love the treatment in the image that makes it seem like this man is a lead actor of a hit TV show or movie. Between the location, lighting, pose, wardrobe, camera work, and post-processing, it all comes together with class.

Dilyana Hezhaz, found on Instagram as @dilyana.hezhaz, is a portrait photographer based in Bulgaria. Hezhaz began shooting three years ago said she enjoys “DIY studio experiments with as little props as possible” to showcase her portrait subjects. She photographs alongside her husband as ND Photography, to which she said, “we're both each other's biggest critics and supporters.”

Jim Rocks is a landscape photographer based in Cork, Ireland and can be found on Instagram simply as @jimrocks. “This particular image was taken early morning whilst driving the winding roads of the Caha Pass in West Cork,” Rocks told PetaPixel through email. “This particular morning the mist was sweeping across the vista in the valley below offering a gorgeous scene that just had to be captured.”

Ken Helal, on Instagram as @kenhelal, considers himself a serious photography hobbyist. “Osprey are my favorite bird as little can match the rush one experiences once they exit the water with their catch,” he said. “In this image, the osprey captured its desired target as well as a little extra.”

Gergo Rugli is a Sydney-based ocean photographer and can be seen on Instagram as @rugligeri. Rugli told PetaPixel that he was born in Hungary and moved to Australia seven years ago where ocean photography became his main passion.

Marcus De La Haye, or @marcusdelahayephotography on Instagram, is a 24-year-old amateur underwater photographer from Jersey, United Kingdom. De La Haye’s work is a must-follow for anyone interested in underwater photography as the varied body of images are sure to inspire.

Anoop Raghavan Manikkoth, or @anoopmanikkoth on Instagram, is a wildlife photographer based out of Dubai. Of this photo of an Egyptian Nightjar in flight, Manikkoth said he was “very lucky” to get it with the desert background as they are typically only shot with a “boring sky” back there.

Ken Evans, found on Instagram as @ken.evans.photography, is a contemporary art photographer who’s “greatly inspired by the beauty of nature and fascinated by the stunning landscapes” that he captures with a camera.

“I started creating photos in the 1980s with formal training, fieldwork and extensive darkroom experience,” Evans told PetaPixel. “I’ve been a photojournalist and photo editor but went on to make my living in advertising.” In 2018, he returned to his roots and began producing fine art photography.

“I produce abstract and minimalist photography because I enjoy working with everyday objects to give them a different look,” he said. “Overall, photography pushes my thinking and challenges my creativity through my medium of choice: the camera.”

Ana Gregoric is a destination wedding and elopement photographer based in Slovenia and can be found on Instagram as @anagregoricphoto. This particular photo was during a styled photoshoot where a plastic Christmas decoration was used to create the effect in the foreground. “I wanted to add something even more mystical to the candlelight, and I also used a smoke machine,” Gregoric said.

Robert Klarić, known as @robertklaricphoto on Instagram, works at Zagreb Airport in Croatia as a load control officer but it’s landscape and aerial photography that is his passion. This photo of Rovinj is cited as “one of the most photogenic towns in the Mediterranean” and was taken by Klarić with his trusty DJI Mavic Air drone.

Stefano Pellegrini is an Italian astro and landscape photographer and can be found on Instagram as @pels_photo. Pellegrini said his goal is to “translate what the eyes see and often the camera can't, to reproduce reality in all its art.” To create strong compositions, he will “dedicate great attention to the location scouting” which requires long mountain hikes to find the perfect spot. “I always compose a real sky on the subject,” Pellegrini told PetaPixel , “always looking for shots where the Milky Way can be co-protagonist of the scene.”

Kevin Moraczewski, or @kevinmoraczewski on Instagram, is a commercial real estate photographer living in New York. While that is his daily duty, for his personal work Moraczewski said he prefers using 35mm film “involving dark, moody subjects.”

Virginia Wilde, known on Instagram as @wild.shores, is a wildlife researcher and mother from Edinburgh. She teaches photography on the weekends and said that in a previous life she worked in and out of Afghanistan as a reporter.

Wilde mentioned to PetaPixel that she loves photographing all wildlife, particularly Scottish wildlife — “And, of course, horses.” This photo was taken in Patagonia where Wilde was to guide what she believes would be the first-ever specialized equine photography trip there, but the pandemic had other plans.

Kristen Fox, found on Instagram as @globalfoxtrot, calls herself an “avid traveler and drone enthusiast.” Fox said that this photo was taken “under Iceland's midnight sun, over one of the country’s many stunning glacial rivers.”

Andrew Weiss, known on Instagram as @adwphillyphoto, is a full-time IT professional with a passion for landscape photography as his hobby. This photo of the Midtown New York City skyline was shot in the spring of 2021 from Hoboken, New Jersey. “I had found this location online using Google Maps and I had hoped that I could utilize the pier as the leading lines into the dense skyline,” Weiss said. “The conditions were perfect for a long-exposure image so I stacked two ND filters to my camera thus reducing the exposure by sixteen stops.” He mentioned that the photo gives him a “paradoxical feel” due to the modern skyscrapers paired up against the dilapidated pier.

Adam Bulley, found on Instagram as @adambulleyphotography, is an award-winning landscape photographer based in Edinburgh, Scotland. “I have had a number of images used in publications, in addition to tourism campaigns by Visit Scotland,” he told PetaPixel.

Daryl Scott Walker, on Instagram as @darylswalker, is a self-taught photographer specializing in adventure, wildlife and automotive. Yannick Schurwanz, found on Instagram as @schurwanzpics, is a self-taught sports photographer. Schurwanz told PetaPixel that he is always trying to expand his creative boundaries.

This photo was taken of the German Rowing Federation athletes during their last training camp before heading off to the Olympic Games.

Anton Shvain, or @antonshvain on Instagram, is a multi-talented photographer working with landscapes, nightscapes, portraiture, and aerials. This stunning photograph was shot at Lake Elton in Russia and is Europe’s largest salt lake. The vast, open landscape does not need extravagance to make subjects stand out. A yellow dress against a moody sky is simple yet effective imagery.

Wendy Hansen, known on Instagram as @aquietwild, creates stunning portraiture against scenic landscapes. This particular photo is from an unedited series of images that highlights the forest fires facing the people of western Canada. Hansen told PetaPixel , “It is my photographic purpose to show the reciprocal relationship between humans and the wild places that envelope us.”

Daniel Zanchi, or @danielzanchi on Instagram, is an iOS developer with a passion for drone photography. This photo was shot at Cala Macarella in Spain while the drone was being piloted from a small boat. Zanchi told PetaPixel he made a wise decision and “went to this wonderful beach a moment after.”

Muhammet E. Doğan is a medical geneticist and Fujifilm X-T20 shooter based out of Kayseri, Turkey. He can be found on Instagram as @dr.m.dogan.

“In many parts of Anatolia, the farmers do not have the opportunity to look after their horses in winter, so they release them into the wild,” Doğan told PetaPixel through email. “Over time, these horses learn to live on their own in nature, reproduce, and sometimes form herds.” He said that the largest herd of over 300 horses is located in the Kayseri province.

In the summertime, villagers will sometimes collect and care for the horses so that they do not damage crops, otherwise, they are left to roam freely. “This photograph is actually about horses who feel freedom and captivity together,” Doğan wrote.
