What a dour little book #FractalNoise was. Also very short. Neither of those is a bad thing, just not what I was expecting I suppose.

I’m disappointed in Christopher Paolini. Both books in the Fractalverse series turn into a long slog of misery and character torture. I don’t want to slog through upwards of 1/3rd of the book just being depressed, harmed, and mangled characters.

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars and Fractal Noise have a lot of interesting ideas. But they don’t carry the story. I can’t recommend his work anymore. In fact I actively advise you to avoid it. I don’t know if he’s trying to be dark and gritty, or if he’s just in a deep dark place, but it’s ugly, near saw level torture porn.

Score. I've been eyeing #FractalNoise by #ChristopherPaolini for some time now and nabbed me a copy at a great deal while picking up some titles as Christmas gifts for others.

So I've been reading Paolini's #FractalNoise. On the one hand, it's easily his most "mature" book, in that it's not shamelessly cribbing off of half a dozen SF/F classics.

On the other hand, it's also kind of a miserable slog, featuring unpleasant characters making stupid decisions, and not in an entertaining fiasco sort of way.

Careful what you wish for, I guess?
