For those on nostalgia trips today on 1 Jan. 2025, who remembers Google Wave? I was cleaning out my virtual attic and found this gem introducing this "personal communication and collaboration tool" 15 years ago.

I didn't watch the whole thing (life is too short), but I giggled a bit. I always thought Google Wave was too "bouncy" - my very technical term. You started to write in it, and then because someone else was posting something, everything "bounced" around, and you had to scroll back and forth a bit to see if you had missed any new info. That really annoyed me, and I have never seen it since, thank goodness. Maybe it was cool in 2009. That feels like a lifetime ago. I miss it like I miss Google Plus... Not. #GoogleWave #nostalgia

Comprendo la fascinación que provoca la escritura a varias manos. Hace tiempo probé #GoogleWave y me pareció que abría posibilidades creativas y de edición enormes. No cuajó una revista que entonces quería hacer y al poco tiempo Google mató el proyecto.

No hay libertad creativa (individual o colaborativa) si no tienes control sobre la herramienta, y tampoco si el dueño de la herramienta puede censurarte de forma punitiva (como lo hace #GoogleDocs contra sus usuarios).

Besides being a decent #WordProcessor, it also managed to transform a failed social media experiement (remember #GoogleWave?) into a collaboration tool so seamless it's hard to see until you are stuck using #MicrosoftWord

Not only that, it's the only thing I've seen that comes closest to demonstrating the ideal of the read-write web #TimBernersLee first imagined 30+ year ago

Fairly new to the #Fediverse so apologies if I'm off-base here, but...

What if the "waves" in #Firefly were not referring to a centralized service like the long-defunct #GoogleWave, but a decentralized protocol of thousands of bespoke applications all speaking a common language?

I think it's time for a rewatch, heh.

With the excitement of #Federation and #ActivityPub, I'm beginning to see some ideas/implementations do some of the features of #GoogleWave. It's been almost 14 years since it was demo'd, but I still wish that took over. Even when #decentralized social media stuff reaches its full potential, there'll still be things I wish we had Wave for.
