Just answered that age old question: who is my target audience?

I think I would like to apply to this: https://asml.cyber.harvard.edu/asml-fellowship-program/

Because I think the project I'm working on is an excellent fit for the third and fourth focus areas (personalized safety and interoperable software infrastructure, respectively). Because two things (edit: FOUR! Four things. ah ah ah) I want:
1. User-by-user opt-in federation + user-by-user authorized viewings only.
2. 'Mixed' privacy mode: posts that are available for all, posts that are available for some, posts that are only available to people who were granted access at the time, etc.
3. Easy import/export from Mastodon, Misskey, and Wordpress, as well as CLI tools to dump out data/posts into AP JSON-LD. I'd also
eventually like it to work with other stuff, such as Twitter archives, etc.
4. Not really directly relevant but I would like the things I write to serve as a springboard for other distributed projects.

I'll have to write up a two page project proposal, though. It's been a hot minute since I wrote up something like this, though. Also? My last application was for a grant/fellowship was unsuccessful... even though I later learned that my advisor mentioned the project off-handedly to someone who had been involved in that grant process, and they were like "whoa! that's exactly the kind of thing we want to fund! you should have applied!". So I don't think I'll be dusting off
that PDF as a starting point...

Anyone have any hot tips for independently applying to a grant/fellowship program without the help of an advisor?

Grant application submitted, finally. The application portal of course had to freeze to scare the hell out of me within 2 hours of the deadline...

Happy to get back to the job I like (actual research).

A full day wasted cutting 57 characters to fit a stupidly rigid 5000 characters limit. Another day will be equally wasted on another section still 460 characters over the same limit. I am sick of this nonsense.
This leaves me with no inspiration whatsoever to write two sections that still need to materialize, and the deadline is in less than 48 hours nowโ€ฆ Slow-motion train wreckโ€ฆ

Interesting research alert! ๐Ÿšจ Ever wondered if your academic institution's ranking affects how you write grant proposals? A study reveals that in #China, lower-status applicants create longer titles to compensate for perceived biases!

๐Ÿ“šโœ๏ธ doi.org/10.1093/reseval/rvae03

Lower-status applicants tend to use more words in their grant titles, especially when applying for larger grants or in more competitive fields like Business Administration. ๐Ÿ“Š

OK, having spent 3 days reviewing comments from colleagues and adding details in response, I'm now 1200 words over the limit. Now to cut it all back to 3000 words then - easy, right?...

The Tragedy Of Academia: Very Smart People Forced To Do Stupid Things

Anton Pirogov writes in his blog about being a non-academic seeing harsh truths about academia from the inside.

pirogov.de/blog/tragedy-academ

So this is the cheap trick often used to ensure that almost every project in academia ends up being a success (at least on paper): You first shoot the arrow, and then you say that whatever you hit was the target all along. It really does work roughly like in that old joke. Your funding proposal basically just needs to say: โ€œWe are going to shoot an arrow into a well-chosen directionโ€ and your final report will say that โ€œafter a lot of deliberation we settled on a promising direction, identified a suitable target and successfully hit it with our arrow, proving the efficacy of our arrow-shooting deviceโ€. Piece of cake.
