Finished reviewing 7 conference proposals. The rest of the weekend will entail grading 8 student papers for my prof., and hanging with my sis and niece for dinner and a walk around the mall. Hoping to get a couple of workouts in as well if all goes according to plan. 😃 #phdLife #TALife #familyTime

Weekly Lab Report:

Health issues are improving and my work rate is climbing.

Extracted a 100kg+ Zeeman Slower from a storage lab in order to ship it to the ATTA facility in Adelaide. I am looking at the best way to crate it. Our own workshop is flat out with a move, so there are a couple of alternatives.

We have identified where the "Magic Smoke" leaks occured in one of our Pockels Cell drivers. These are HV components, so getting the right protections for our multimeter and oscilloscope is vital. Replacement electronic components to be ordered next week.

While we go through that process, we are in the process of bringing up our old FemtoLaser 1kHz 30fs 800nm pulsed laser. Replaced the chiller water and fired up the oscillator. Our postdoc, who previously worked on this model and its successor, went through the process of getting mode-locking on the beam. After mode-locking, the next step is to get a smooth broadband signal on the spectrometer. The manual for this old laser is much more descriptive than thew "turnkey" Coherent Legend Duo that is out of action.

Muutenkin jos oot vaikka apurahalla, ni oot sellainen väliinputoaja kaikissa keloissa ja työkkäreissä ja pankeissa ettei mitään järkeä :D Esim. mun piti ihan kirjallisesti perustella jollekin ylemmän tason virkailijalle jossain, että miksi väitöskirjaTUTKIJA ei ole kokopäiväinen opiskelija, koska se on ilmeisesti se oletus noilla. Kokopäiväinen opiskelijahan ei ole defaulttina oikeutettu yhtään mihinkään tukiin, paitsi opintotukeen, jota väitöskirjaa tekevä siis ei ymmärtääkseni yleensä voi saada koska jatkotutkinto. Ja tää oli siis ihan selvää myös sille perusvirkailijalle, mutta silti mun hakemus meni jonnekin jatkoselvittelyihin, koska niin nyt vaan kuuluu tehdä. Ja mihinkään päivärahoihin en tietenkään ollut oikeutettu sinä aikana kun tota asiaa käsiteltiin jossain.

Niin ja apurahakaudethan ei tietenkään kerrytä esim. työssäoloehtoa. Olen ollut apurahalla v. 2018 lähtien, oli tosi kiva toimittaa työttömyyskassalle palkkakuitteja pätkäduuneista melkein kymmenen vuoden takaa, kun on pankkikin vaihtunut välissä 🫠
