#HeatSetInsert

Designed a nice stand for my... Hot melt nut implant machine. That's what I'm calling it from now on :)

Photo of 3d printed stand for a soldering iron. It's light gray, keeps the soldering iron at a 30 degree angle, and has labelled holes for different heat set insert tipsProduct page screenshot for a soldering iron with heat set insert tips. The product is called a "hot melt nut implant machine"

In other news, I added some tip storage to the left side of the press. Six sizes of insertion tip live there.

The model is here. (Not mine.)

The stealth press, in green ASA plastic, now has an attachment on its left side with six M4 heat set inserts in a vertical line. Five of them have insertion tips screwed in; the sixth is empty.

My heat set insert press is also an extractor. I put an M3 screw into the soldering iron to use as a tip, then removed an insert by heating it up and pulling. (You have to screw into the insert before attaching the screw to the iron.)

The screw is a lousy thermal conductor, and it makes lousy contact with the heating element. I ran the iron 40℃ hotter for removal than insertion.

Close-up of the tip of my stealth press's soldering iron. The brass tip insertion tool has been replaced by a steel M3 screw with the head inside the clip and contacting the heating element. It is screwed into a heat set insert, and the whole assemblye is hovering a few millimeters above the printed plastic piece the insert was just extracted from.

Matte PETG with Hilbert infill on a textured build plate is certainly a look. It took about an hour to lay down the first layer.

Unfortunately, I got a layer shift, so I have to print it again.

A black PETG build plate is sitting in front of the press with its original green ASA build plate. The black plate has a texture that's almost fabric-like and not like most 3D printed objects. The light is low, so the surface texture is accentuated, and the plates cast long shadows.

I assembled the press the same night, but I got around to taking pictures this morning. A couple of the inserts were crooked enough that I had to heat them up and move them, so that's educational. I had to file down the warped pieces in a few places to make things fit, too.

I am printing a PETG build plate now. It gets two inserts, and that will be the press's first use.

Stealth Press on a workbench. it is green ASA with blue ABS accents. The print quality is not great. The press is built around a 30mm vertical linear rail. A soldering iron is clamped to the rail's car, and a spring loaded cable pulls it to the top. The iron's tip is a cylindrical M3 heat set insert. The iron's cord goes through a strain relief block. There is a carrying handle integrated into the top of the press.

I got the kit from dfh.fm. I also got a couple of bags of black nickel plated inserts from them. Here you can see the very first two inserts I did. I pushed the black one down too far, but it still works.

You can also see that the side toward the camera is warped. :-(

I also went a little crazy and bought about 1,000 inserts from CNC Kitchen in all the sizes they have. So I guess I'm a heat set insert guy now.

A green printed piece of ASA with two heat set inserts. The left one is brass and is set to a good depth. The right one is black nickel plated and is about a millimeter too low. The side of the piece is warped about a millimeter -- the piece is about 50-60 millimeters long and 15 wide.

New project, new build thread.

I am making a Stealth Press for heat set inserts.
