THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS:
The Athabasca Portage was an 80-mile horse journey south from Fort Assiniboine, to Edmonton House. It might have been the shortest leg of the journey east to Hudson Bay, but it was by no means the easiest. For once there were no mountains to climb; but the trail led through a morass of swamps, bogs, burnt trees and deep streams.
