The Kuomintang's loss in Taiwan's recent presidential race highlights a crisis within the island's oldest party: How to appeal to voters who increasingly see themselves as distinct from China, while satisfying its influential old guard who favor eventual unification. japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/01/

Tajwan - wybory i po wyborach.

Wyniki głosowania są oznaką kryzysu obydwu głównych partii politycznych Tajwanu – DPP i KMT, które stworzyły na wyspie duopol.

Concession speeches have been delivered by both #HouYuih and #KoWenje.
In other words: The #DPP ticket of #LaiChingte and #HsiaoBikhim has won the presidential #elections in #Taiwan.
Don't be fooled by #Beijing: This is a vote for stability, continuity and the #statusquo. This is NOT a vote for escalation. Only #China is looking to escalate the situation and for excuses to do so. Stand with democratic and free Taiwan! #TaiwanisnotChina

Wow: #HouYuih thanking #MaYingjeou in his post-#election speech is pretty rich seen the recent clash and Ma not being invited to the closing rally in Banqiao.

The mood and the body language is not that of a winner - understandably so, the #KMT ticket is trailing the #DPP ticket by 7%, with the #TPP ticket another 7% behind.

"Please do not cry, please do not be disappointed", Hou says.
I'll rather pop a bottle of good bubbly! Concession speeches of the KMT sound pretty good. #Taiwan #elections

One of Asia’s most consequential elections this year has kicked off in Taiwan, as the self-ruled island’s 19.5 million eligible voters head to polls to choose their next president, vice president and legislators. japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/01/

Barring a dramatic upset, incumbent vice president Lai Ching-te looks set to win the presidential election, but without a strong mandate from voters. japantimes.co.jp/commentary/20

Washington's stance and policies on Taiwan are unlikely to change significantly regardless of who wins the island’s presidential and legislative elections on Saturday, according to a former director of the United States’ de facto embassy in Taiwan. japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/01/

Frustrated young voters could shape the outcome of Taiwan's presidential election next month, and it might not be relations with China but bread-and-butter issues that determine who they vote for. japantimes.co.jp/news/2023/12/

By opting for #JawShaukong as the running mate of #HouYuih for the presidential election in #Taiwan, the #KMT is going for a deep-blue campaign with the fear of #war as its core element. There's a pungent note of Beijing-appeasing #MaYingJeou in all of this. Voters should not fall for this nonsense. Taiwan will not get peace by submission, but lose its #freedoms and #civicrights for sure. Not that the KMT would care about that...
Keep in mind that only #China wants war.

The split over a proposed joint ticket among Taiwan's top two opposition parties bolsters the governing party candidate’s chances in the coming presidential election. That won’t please Beijing. japantimes.co.jp/news/2023/11/

With today's deadline for candidates to register, January's presidential #elections in #Taiwan are moving a whole lot closer.
As predicted by me earlier on, opposition parties #KMT and #TPP could not agree on a common ticket. Too much feel of self-importance on both sides there.
As for the running mates, the choices are very telling: #KoWenje has gone for an offspring of one of Taiwan's richest dynasties, #HouYuih has opted for deep-blue reactionary #JawShaukong.
Very telling indeed. 1/2

Taiwan’s top two opposition presidential candidates were supposed to meet to decide on who would lead an alliance ticket. Instead, they engaged in on-stage insult-trading, political grandstanding and, at times, off-topic ranting, beamed to the island of some 23 million people. japantimes.co.jp/news/2023/11/

"Breaking: The Ko/Hou joint ticket is officially off

Ko will go back to running for president on behalf of the TPP as a third-party candidate

We are back to a 3-4 candidate presidential race

Lai is SO relieved right now."

A potential joint bid for Taiwan's presidency by the island's two main opposition parties was in disarray on Saturday as they bickered on how to agree on who will run for president with time running out to make a decision. japantimes.co.jp/news/2023/11/

@yaohsi
Curious how this blue and white ticket is going to work. #KoWenje will not be ready to play the second fiddle or follow any script or orders from the #KMT. And the latter is unlikely to take a step back and let someone else but #HouYuih be the face of their campaign and push for power.
The arrogance of a formerly autocratic party versus the arrogance of one guy: These magnetic poles may easily tear this uneasy coalition apart. #Taiwan #elections #FarEast
