Life pro tip for abled folk: look out for disabled people. Remember that you are only ever *temporarily* abled. Sooner or later, one way or the other, everyone joins our ranks. Even if you are not moved to support disabled folk for other reasons, it is in your own best interests to fight with us to erase stigma, to improve accessibility, to create equal opportunities. Listen to disabled people; let our voices be heard. We are the pioneers living your future.

Black and white sketch of a group of people. Left to right: a man wearing sunglasses holding the leash of a guide dog, a short-haired wheelchair user, a person with short hair and an undercut wearing a shirt that says "Invisibly Ill", a person with long hair, a dress, a cane and a pair of goggles on their head, a Black power chair user, and a short-haired person wearing a hearing aid. Above this is the quote "Listen to the disabled; let our voices be heard. We are the pioneers living your future." In the bottom right is the artist's name, Maxine Green.

Thing is, every day could be International Day of Persons with Disabilities, if we were ready to start trying. I mean, really trying. 1 in 5 people are disabled, but it takes 5 out of 5 people to fight prejudice, stand up for equal rights and equal access, and make this a world where disabled people are celebrated, supported, and given a proper place at the table.

Abled folk reading this: what's one thing you can do to uplift disabled people in the coming year? Disabled people, what's one way abled folk could uplift you? Reply to this toot so y'all can read and pool your ideas ๐Ÿงก

When you're disabled in this world, you have to give yourself grace. You have to make self-compassion a habit, because so often the world will fail to show you compassion--or more likely, actively beat you down. And so you have to practice loving yourself, caring for yourself, trusting yourself, valuing yourself *double*, to make up for what the abled society we live in so often refuses to provide.

That's why self-love, when you're disabled, is a radical act. Self-love is, in fact, revolution. It's being on the sharp end of all that ableist hate and countering it with compassion and celebration and pride.
