Diamine Registrar's Blue Black and ESS Registrar's Blue Black are so similar, I cannot tell them apart other than by the label on the bottle.

I bought "the other" iron gall registrar's ink – the one from https://registrarsink.co.uk/ – and am looking forward to trying it out.
Side note: customs has gotten considerably expensive since Brexit.

Earlier this week, I bought a Schneider Wavy fountain pen and filled it with Diamine Registrar's blue black iron gall ink. Today, it stopped working. After two letters, it just wouldn't write anymore. I thought, maybe this cheap pen isn't equipped to handle iron gall ink and it just dried up. After a brief investigation, the root cause was found in an entirely different place: the converter had ran out. I had written so much over the last couple days that the ink was just empty. No flow issues, no drying out, no hard starts.

Anyway, I bought this pen because it writes a touch broader than the Online Slope fountain pen. I believe they're both sold with medium nibs but the Schneider Wavy nib is a touch broader, it seems. And for the price I was willing to find out the hard way whether or not it would cope with iron gall ink. Turns out: yes, yes it does. It works very well.

The fountain pens from TWSBI and Lamy I tried don't seem to like this kind of ink, but the cheap ones from Online and Schneider have no problem whatsoever.

As I was writing my diary in mother-in-law's garden, the Mrs accidentally squirted water onto my book. Which settles the debate whether or not waterproof ink is worth the trouble, at least for me. The purple part of R&K Scabiosa (an iron gall ink) came up and went but the dark iron gall part didn't budge even where the ink had just dried.

Close up photo at a shallow angle of my diary. The dark purple ink has been partly washed away but the text hasn't lost any of its readability because the dark grey part of the ink didn't go anywhere. However, you cannot read much of the text because the photo doesn't show the whole width of the page and only part of it is in focus.

R&K Salix vs Diamine Registrar's, two iron gall inks. You can see that both inks darken over time. After one day, Diamine Registrar's has barely any blue left in its color and I'm sure it will darken a bit more over the next day or two. R&K Salix loses a bit of vibrancy but remains blue in color.
The funny thing is, while writing, Diamine Registrar's looks very similar in color to darkened Salix but within seconds starts to darken to what can be seen in the bottom right of the image.

Comparison of two different inks in two columns of handwritten text. The left column is written in Rohrer and Klingner Salix, a medium dark blue iron gall ink. The right column is written in Diamine Registrar's, a blue black iron gall ink.
The top paragraph of each column shows what the ink looks like one day after being written. The bottom paragraph has been written shortly before the paper was scanned.
Iron gall ink tends to darken for a day or two before it settles on its final color. This can be seen in the picture because the top paragraphs are darker in color than the bottom ones. This effect is more noticeable in the right column, though.

Ah yes, R&K Salix is such a beautiful ink! In my every day carry pocket notebook (Clairefontaine paper) it shows nice shading. I've got my trusty Lamy Safari inked up with it. 10/10 would recommend.

Paper usually has that little bit of a shine when you hold it just right into the light. And so does some fountain pen ink when dry. What I absolutely love about Diamine Registrar's is that it doesn't. It's matte and doesn't reflect light like the paper surrounding it. It's the little details that I enjoy the most about some inks.

Speaking of iron gall ink, this is how Rohrer & Klingner Salix ink behaves when used in a dip pen. I used a nib that can hold a lot of ink, dipped it into the bottle once and wrote until it ran out. You can see the gradient of color intensity as the amount of ink the nib puts down decreases.

A bottle of ink and a dip pen on top of a notepad with squared paper. The words "Deep Space Number Station" and R&K Salix" are handwritten, followed by repeating counting digits and letters of the alphabet. At the top, the blue ink looks so dark that it is almost indistinguishable from black. Around the middle, the ink starts shading, showing lighter and darker shades of a dark grey-ish blue. Towards the bottom, the letters become lighter and lighter, until in the last line there's almost no shading left and the letters start fading into nothingness as the nib runs out of ink.Same scene as before, shot almost parallel to the desk. The label of the bottle of ink is in focus and states that it's the iron gall ink with the nickname Salix by Rohrer & Klingner. One can see the nib of the dip pen. It has a small metal flap over the main ink channel that enables the nib to hold a lot of ink for a dip pen nib. The handwriting on the notepad is out of focus.Closeup shot of the nib. The ink bottle and most of the handwriting is out of focus.

I love running my finger over dried iron gall ink writing. It feels different, a tad rougher than the paper around it. I just love the haptics of writing with fountain pens on quality paper and the iron gall roughness is one of the aspects.

Unfortunately, R&K Salix did not work out in my TWSBI Diamond Mini. I switched back to R&K dokumentus black and put Salix into a TWSBI Eco. Let's hope that works better. I really wanted an iron gall ink in my carry-everywhere fountain pen but as it turns out, this combination of pen and ink just isn't ideal. The much wetter dokumentus ink doesn't cause any issues whatsoever in this pen and I think I'll stick with it for a while. It does feather and bleed on low quality paper but I think I'll just have to live with that. On the plus side, R&K dokumentus is a document-grade archival ink that is ISO 12757-2 certified.

I've had my favorite ink in my favorite fountain pen for a short while now and unfortunately it doesn't work as reliably as expected. It's the TWSBI Diamond Mini and Diamine Registrar's ink. Sometimes the feed seems to clog up and the nib runs out of ink. I then have to squirt out a bit of ink using the piston mechanism to get the ink flowing again. I'm not sure what's happening exactly but I suspect the combination of pen and ink just isn't ideal. Maybe I'll have to switch that pen to a different ink.
How do I properly clean iron gall ink out of a fountain pen? The feed is unfortunately not transparent so I can't see what's going on inside. And I don't want to take it apart if I can avoid it. Any advice is appreciated.

Oooh exciting! Wrote the first couple of pages of my very first letter to my very first pen pal. I mostly used waterproof ink because that letter will travel to another country and I can only imagine what it might encounter along the way.
I'll make a decision tomorrow as to whether it's finished or if I write some more.
