New Read - The Liminal Zone

The Liminal Zone is a collection of four short manga tales from the master of body horror and horror manga, Junji Ito. I picked it up from the library not that long ago and this marks my first manga read for 2025.

The four stories are Weeping Woman Way, Madonna, The Spirit Flow of Aokigahara, and Slumber. Each are wild and filled with the types of creepy scenes you'd expect out of a Junji Ito manga.

My favorite of the stories had to be Weeping Woman Way. In this one, a couple passes through a town and sees a woman supposedly hired to weep during a funeral. After passing by, the girl in the relationship cannot stop crying. They return back to that community to try to find out what caused her to cry so uncontrollably. It's filled with such wild body horror and weeping that it's hard to look away.

Each story is self contained and disconnected from the previous ones, which gives you an easy stop point between stories if you needed a break from the horror.

If you are a fan of horror manga, of course I recommend this collection. I am trying to be purposely vague about the stories, as they are worth experiencing. However, a warning there is violence, references to suicide, and verbal / physical abuse in this collection. So, be warned and be careful if that type of content is an issue for you.

Between moments of feeling like trash this week, I did stop by the library to pick up some books that I had requested. Yes, I requested the next three volumes of Hi Score Girl. While there, I randomly picked up "Wanted" and "The Liminal Zone." The first is a single volume Shojo manga about pirates, so I'm down. The second is a single volume of Junji Ito horror that I have yet to read. So, a fine assortment. Not shown, but I picked up volume 1 of Frieren for my 15 year old to try out as they himmed and hawed over what to get from the library. I saw that Vol 1 of the series was there, snagged it, and said, "Here, try this." I also said that I'd read it myself even if they don't like it. So, there's that. Will report back individually on my library reads later! I just discovered him from the TOMIE live action movies decades ago, and now that anime is amazing !

[EN] I got back from Japan yesterday, so here are the things I just had to get. As a huge fan of Shinkai Makoto’s, I had no other choice but to buy the artbook and the OST for “Suzume”, as well as the official novelizations of “The Garden of Words”, “Weathering with You” and “Suzume”. I also got “Kimitachi wa dō ikiru ka” — the novel which inspired Miyazaki Hayao to make his latest film (titled after the book) — and “Uzumaki” by Itō Junji, because the Polish translation has gone out of sale and is extremely hard to find in an acceptable price. Except for the artbook and the manga, all these things come from a chain of second-hand shops 👌🏻

Wczoraj wróciłem z japońskiego urlopu, więc dzielę się moimi fanowskimi zdobyczami. Jako psychofan Shinkaia Makoto oczywiście musiałem zaopatrzyć się w artbook i płytę ze ścieżką dźwiękową z „Suzume” oraz w powieściowe adaptacje „Ogrodu słów”, „Tenki no ko” i „Suzume”. Do tego „Kimitachi wa dō ikiru ka”, czyli powieść, która zainspirowała Miyazakiego podczas tworzenia ostatniego filmu (pod tym samym tytułem) i manga „Uzumaki”, bo znaleźć ją w ludzkiej cenie w Polsce graniczy z cudem. Wszystko poza artbookiem i mangą znalezione w sklepach z książkami i płytami z second-handu 👌🏻
