How many companies are misclassifying workers right now—without knowing it?

On the way to school today, my kid asked me what my job is. I said "'Project coordinator' according to my lab, 'logistics specialist III' according to the university, but 'factotum' is the most accurate description."

"What's a 'factotum'?" she asked.

"I do everything, but if I do it right, no one ever notices that I'm even there."

"Huh."

"I'm quite good at it."

"Are you our factotum at home?"

"I believe so."

"You're quite good at it."

Job recruiters and hiring managers are quick to say that resumes (and cover letters, if included) should be tailored to the job description.

I agree. However!

How often do you post job descriptions that are tailored to the job? Do you always trim out irrelevant boilerplate from the job title template? Are you always adding details that differentiate this job from other jobs with the same title within the company?

If you require candidates to have 5+ years of experience at anything, then the job you are hiring for is by definition NOT "entry level."

EDIT: I'm getting some pushback on this, so let me make the following clarification:

If you require candidates to have 5+ years of experience at anything, then the job you are hiring for is by definition NOT "entry level," YOU STUPID ASSHOLE.

Interesting @musebrarian post today on OCLC’s Hanging Together blog:

“Filling the bench: Evolving roles in job descriptions and hiring”

…with wider relevance to and in the sector. It also quotes a good point on one type of unintended outcome from some well-intentioned position descriptions: “There’s…a risk of bait-and-switch if we hire someone for an assignment that was overly aspirational and fails to materialize.”

There once was a principal engineer,
Who was very principled.
The principal reason she was often hired,
Was because of her principles.
