For the 2004-2006 Prius - and some other - Toyota models, the odometer was designed to read only up to 299,999 miles, engineers deciding that was apparently enough, the first digit designed to emit only a 0, 1, or 2. Thus, those years of the Prius can never display more than the mechanical limit of 299,999 miles.
