Neue Fantasy-Rezi:

28th finished book of the year: Reckless by Lauren Roberts 3.75 ⭐️ - Maintains a similar pace and excitement as the first book, but focusses a little too much on the core will they/won’t they dynamic
Pretend. That’s the word behind which all the romantic tension in this book revolves around. Pretend things are different. Pretend we aren’t who we are. Because heaven forbid our main characters actually admit that they want each other. Once again, the dual perspective of the book makes it all so very transparent and left me just wanting to shout “kiss!” at them.
While the first book very much dealt with the power dynamics and caste type structure in the world, this time round we get more of an insight into the wider political geography. As our heroine leads a merry chase, we learn that what makes them the Elites of society in Ilya doesn’t translate to respect elsewhere.
What we gain in world building, we lose in some of the character development outside of the main pairing. While some focus is given in the form of a rare third perspective chapter (for context that is required by the end), we see very few other characters and I found it made things feel altogether too focussed on just the main characters.
Book three isn’t due to come out until April next year, so this cliffhanger will remain hanging until then!

27th finished book of the year: Powerless by Lauren Roberts 3.75 ⭐️ - While engaging and fast paced, and with a few sharp twists, I didn’t find the main characters all that interesting if I’m honest with myself. The premise of Powerless is almost summed up in the single word of the title - our heroine is hiding in a world of super powered humans, having to pass herself off as one of the Elite and hide the fact that she’s Ordinary. Yes, those are actually what they’re referred too - about as on-the-nose as Scott Westerfeld’s pointed use of Uglies and Pretties in his novels by the same names.
Pitted in a very Hunger Games-esque pageant for supremacy (killing non-mandatory) we see her get to know members of the upper-class Elite and find that commonalities with them, forming some new bonds and cautious friendships. The requisite enemies-to-lovers storyline is fun, teasy, and (with the dual-perspective of the two main-characters) very transparent. Perhaps because of this, I found that it began to feel a bit drawn out and over-stressed as the book progresses, wishing they’d just get on with it or not. While the ending is plenty dramatic and just as big of a cliffhanger as you’d expect from the first book in a trilogy, I can’t say I found it truly satisfying. However, I’m looking forward to reading the next one to see where things go. #powerless #laurenroberts #books #bookstodon #fantasy #romance #romantasybooks
