How macOS 26 Tahoe updates: 3 Catalogues and preparing to download

<p>Following a <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2026/03/02/how-macos-26-tahoe-updates-1/">general outline</a> of what happens during a macOS 26 update, and a <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2026/03/04/how-macos-26-tahoe-updates-2-finite-state-machines/">more detailed account</a> of how it uses finite state machines and sends progress reports to Apple, this article describes what happens before Software Update downloads the main update. This was started by opening Software Update in System Settings of macOS 26.2 when the update to 26.3 was available, on a Mac mini M4 Pro. The Appendix at the end explains several in-house jargon terms used widely through these log entries.</p>
<h4>Check for an update</h4>
<p>In this case, checking for an update was instigated by opening Software Update in System Settings. That initiated a series of preliminary checks to:</p>
<ul>
<li>determine whether that Mac and user are enrolled in a beta-test programme;</li>
<li>obtain the Pallas audience, in this case <em>macOS Customer;</em></li>
<li>determine the time interval since the last scan for updates, and its result. As that was 632.8 seconds ago and there were no updates reported as being available then, a further scan is deemed acceptable;</li>
<li>set the base URL for Pallas of mesu.apple.com/assets/macos/.</li>

<p>One of precious few pieces of good news last week was Apple’s MacBook Neo.</p>
<p>On the face of it, the Neo is the Apple silicon Mac with worse specifications than the first base M1 models of 2020, with a mere 2 Performance and 4 Efficiency CPU cores and a 5-core GPU, just 8 GB memory and 256 or 512 GB internal SSD. And it doesn’t have a single Thunderbolt port. But if you’re buying your Mac on its technical specifications, you’re not going to be a Neo user.</p>
<p>For consumers, the education sector, and the many others who want something lighter than Air, and who don’t want to pay for all the features they’ll never use, a Neo will be ideal. The only shortcoming I can see isn’t in the Neo itself, but in backing it up. As Time Machine doesn’t back up to iCloud, wouldn’t it be ideal if Apple were to offer a wireless backup system? Until eight years ago, it had what was then a perfect product in its Time Capsule.</p>
<p>If the Neo is as successful as it deserves to be, it’s likely to revitalise many independent software developers, who offer neat little apps rather than the heavyweights rented to us by large corporations, including Apple Creator Studio. Maybe we’ll even see the return of a compact office suite like AppleWorks.</p>

Explainer: Mac firmware version numbering

<p>Firmware engineering must be among the least glamorous of the specialities, but it’s literally among the most fundamental. As regular users seldom need to come into contact with firmware and its versions, how those are numbered is kept as a dark secret. This article reveals what I have gathered.</p>
<p>Although you will come across different usage elsewhere, I here draw the distinction between:</p>
<ul>
<li>True ROM, including Macintosh ROM (Classic Macs) and Apple silicon Boot ROM, is set in the factory and normally can’t be changed;</li>
<li><em>Firmware</em> that can be updated in place includes Mac OS ROM (PowerPC), EFI Boot ROM or bootloader, and LLB/iBoot (Apple silicon);</li>
<li>The operating system including any kernel, in Mac OS, Mac OS X, OS X and macOS, which are usually updated repeatedly.</li>
</ul>
<h4>PowerPC: Open Firmware</h4>
<p>Classic Macs using Motorola 68K processors have their own Macintosh ROM with opaque hexadecimal versions. After the introduction of PowerPC models in 1994, that changed with the Power Macintosh 9500 of 1995 to support Apple’s version of Open Firmware.</p>

Behind the scenes: SilentKnight and updates

<p>Not too long ago, macOS usually only checked for system software updates once a day. If your Mac’s routines didn’t coincide with Apple’s release of updates, they might arrive a day or two late, and sometimes they were left a lot longer. When I started writing this blog over 11 years ago, one of my goals was to spread information about those updates, so we could all have confidence that our Macs were as well protected as possible and got bugs fixed promptly. In those days, those mostly involved vulnerabilities in Java and Adobe Flash Player.</p>
<p>At first, this was all about what Apple has always been worst at, communicating. In spite of the unsung efforts of its engineers, Apple has chosen to remain as silent as possible about bugs and security. The only time I’m aware that its silence was broken was back in July 2019, when it released an update to its Malware Removal Tool MRT to remove a hidden web server installed by Zoom’s installer, and even then the information was <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2019/07/10/apple-has-pushed-an-update-to-mrt-to-remove-zooms-hidden-web-server/">passed on furtively</a>.</p>
<p>Just before Christmas 2016, I released the first version of LockRattler to check and report on security systems, among them the installed version of XProtect. That was widened to include firmware version checks in EFIcientC in July 2019, which quickly turned into SilentKnight.</p>

<p>After reading <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2026/03/05/what-can-you-do-when-software-update-cant/">today’s article here</a> about fixing software update problems and the <code>softwareupdate</code> command tool, two eagle-eyed readers, Gurt and upstreamer, insisted that they were being offered two full installers for macOS Sequoia 15.7.5. Although for one of them this might have occurred because of previous membership in a beta-testing programme, that didn’t explain them both. I therefore checked again this evening, and was surprised to see the list of available updates does now offer two apparently identical full installers for macOS Sequoia 15.7.5 Build 24G617.</p>

<p>If you fancy downloading either of them, use the command<br />

<p>That should download the Installer app into your Applications folder.</p>
<p>Software Update doesn’t offer 15.7.5 as an update for Sequoia 15.7.4. There’s no mention of the release of 15.7.5 anywhere else, in particular Apple&#82

What can you do when Software Update can’t?

<p>What can you do when you know there’s an update available, but your Mac is pretending there isn’t? I’m here referring to those delivered through Software Update, so come from Apple’s software update servers. Although there are several ways to talk to it, all such updates rely on the <code>softwareupdated</code> service, giving you a choice of solutions.</p>
<h4>Check the obvious</h4>
<p>Before going any further, check that updates aren’t being blocked because there’s insufficient free space on your Mac’s startup disk, and a laptop has ample charge in its battery or is running on mains power.</p>
<h4>Restart</h4>
<p>Sometimes <code>softwareupdated</code> seems to lapse into a coma, and the best way to wake it up is to restart your Mac. Don’t expect it to jump into action as soon as you’ve logged in, but give it five minutes first.</p>
<h4>Safe mode</h4>
<p>If a standard restart doesn’t do the trick, start your Mac up in Safe mode, leave it five minutes, and try again. Although Apple no longer includes this as one of the purposes of Safe mode, by disabling third-party extensions it gives <code>softwareupdated</code> every opportunity to do what it’s there for.</p>

Apple has released an update to XProtect for all macOS

<p>Overnight, Apple released an update to XProtect, bringing it to version 5332. As usual, it doesn’t release information about what security issues this update might address.</p>
<p>This version adds one new Yara rule for MACOS.OSB and makes no changes to the OSASCRIPT rules in XPScripts.yr.</p>
<p>You can check whether this update has been installed by opening <strong>System Information</strong> via <strong>About This Mac</strong>, and selecting the <strong>Installations</strong> item under <strong>Software</strong>.</p>
<p>A full listing of security data file versions is given by <strong>SilentKnight</strong> and <strong>SystHist</strong> for El Capitan to Tahoe available from <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/lockrattler-systhist/">their product page</a>. If your Mac hasn’t yet installed this update, you can force it using SilentKnight or at the command line.</p>
<p>If you want to install this as a named update in SilentKnight, its label is <code>XProtectPlistConfigData_10_15-5332</code></p>
<h4>Sequoia and Tahoe systems only</h4>
<p>This update has already been released for Sequoia and Tahoe via iCloud. If you want to check it manually, use the Terminal command<br />

then enter your admin password. If that returns version 5332 but your Mac still reports an older version is installed, you should be able to force the update using<br />

How macOS 26 Tahoe updates: 2 Finite state machines

<p>Script-based updaters were underpowered and too unreliable to build the Signed System Volume and other components of macOS in Big Sur and beyond. When Apple was designing the software update subsystem to be used for its new Macs, it chose to develop a modern design from scratch, built around finite state machines. The end result is seen today in the log entries made when updating macOS.</p>
<p>At first sight those appear to be examples of everything the Unified log shouldn’t be. From the initial entries reporting the <code>softwareupdated</code> service is checking for updates, there’s a succession of huge and apparently incomprehensible entries in the log that surely belong somewhere else. In fact we’re given a remarkable step-by-step account of some of the most elegant and successful engineering design in macOS that reveals its inner workings. It also shows how Apple is now able to detect and fix update problems in real-time.</p>
<h4>Finite state machine</h4>
<p>This is a formal model used widely in computing to design, describe and implement a machine or automaton that can only exist in one of a finite number of states. Its state changes in response to defined events, which result in actions that in turn determine its transition to its next state. Although some FSMs are non-deterministic and subject to chance, those in <code>softwareupdated</code> are governed by deterministic rules. New build of SilentKnight 2.12 for Tahoe 26.4 beta testers

<p>If you are testing beta-releases of macOS Tahoe 26.4 and use SilentKnight, you will be aware that betas 2 and 3 cause it to crash on launch, on Apple silicon Macs. This is because the firmware version returned by these betas is completely different from all others for Apple silicon Macs for the last five years. As a result of that, SilentKnight doesn’t recognise them as Apple silicon Macs, and tries to obtain their firmware versions in a way that’s only compatible with older Intel Macs.</p>
<p>I’m very grateful to all those beta-testers who informed me of this problem, and those who sent me crash logs.</p>
<p>I have now incorporated a workaround into a new build of this version. Although this doesn’t attempt to interpret the new firmware version number, which will be reported as requiring updating, this has been tested against beta 3 and does now recognise Apple silicon Macs, and shouldn’t crash. Although this should also be compatible with all other Macs and macOS that support SilentKnight version 2.12 build 59, it’s only required on 26.4 beta 2 and later. <p>Apple has released an update to macOS Tahoe bringing it to version 26.3.1. This adds support for its new Studio Display announced earlier this week. It’s also <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-us/122868" target="_blank">claimed to contain</a> “bug fixes”, although none are detailed.</p>
<p>Download size for Apple silicon Macs is around 3 GB.</p>
<p>There are no published CVE entries for this update, so no publicly known security vulnerabilities are claimed to have been addressed.</p>
<p>This version has a build number of 25D2128, and there’s no change in iBoot firmware, which remains at 13822.81.10. </p>
<p>Looking at changes in bundled apps, there’s only one small increment in build and version numbers, in Passwords, which rises from version 2.3 to 2.3.1. Safari goes up a single build increment from 26.3 (21623.2.7.11.6) to 26.3.1 (21623.2.7.11.7).</p>
<p>In /System/Library, almost all the changes are in kernel extensions added to support the new Studio Displays. These include:</p>

Does Safe mode check the startup disk?

<p>Look in <a href="https://support.apple.com/116946" target="_blank">Apple’s support note</a> explaining Safe mode, and you’ll see a list of three things that mode is claimed to do:</p>
<ul>
<li>“Prevents certain software from loading as your Mac starts up. This includes login items and extensions that aren’t required by macOS, and fonts that weren’t installed by macOS.”</li>
<li>“Performs a basic check of your startup disk, similar to the more comprehensive check performed by the First Aid feature of Disk Utility.”</li>
<li>“Clears some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed. This can temporarily make more storage space available on your startup disk.”</li>
</ul>
<p>That note is well-maintained, and its US version was last updated on 5 December last year. This article examines what “basic check of your startup disk” is performed, how “similar” it is to the First Aid feature in Disk Utility, and whether it differs from checks performed during startup in normal mode. All testing has been performed in macOS 26.3 Tahoe on Apple silicon Macs.</p>
<h4>Reporting</h4>
<p>Disk checks made in Safe mode aren’t reported to the user in the GUI. There’s no notification that they have been completed, neither is there any record made in System Information. They are, though, reported in three more obscure places most folk won’t try acc

<p>Although the way that macOS updates itself <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2026/02/28/explainer-macos-updates/">has changed</a> beyond all recognition over the last few years, we tend to assume that it still works much as it did in the past, downloading a single update file, decompressing and installing that. This series of articles takes a deeper dive into what actually happens, and tries to explain how it differs from previous package updates.</p>
<p>This account is primarily based on a detailed analysis of log entries obtained from updating 26.2 to 26.3 on a Mac mini M4 Pro, supported by additional information obtained from updating virtual machines to 26.3. macOS updates have changed considerably even since Big Sur, but I believe that their mechanisms have remained more similar than they differ from those before.</p>
<h4>Download size</h4>
<p>One of the most basic and striking observations about macOS updates is their variation in size. Although those reported on many Apple silicon Macs making the same single-step update are similar, some are considerably greater. As updates aren’t offered in standalone form, and are only provided via Software Update or its command line equivalent <code>softwareupdate</code>, the only practical way to assess this is to update a range of virtual machines.</p>

Last Week on My Mac: Bugs of wonder

<p>Last week Apple released the second beta of macOS 26.4 to developers, and almost immediately I was receiving reports that SilentKnight crashed on launch in that new beta. Given how unusual that has been in previous versions, I was grateful to hear so quickly, and for so many of you to provide crash reports. As usual they don’t point to anything specific, but led me to wonder whether something might have broken in AppKit in that beta.</p>
<p>But there’s a strange observation reported by SilentKnight’s old predecessor LockRattler, which continues to work normally in 26.4 beta 2: that reports a bizarre iBoot firmware version number from Apple silicon Macs. Instead of a number like 13822.101.2 that I might have expected, LockRattler gives “mBoot-18000.100.10.0.1”, which is random nonsense. Yet it’s listed in a mammoth <a href="https://theapplewiki.com/wiki/IBoot_(Bootloader)" target="_blank">compilation of iBoot version numbers</a> in the Apple Wiki as an occasional fault.</p>
<p>“mBoot-18000.100.10.0.1” is a problem for SilentKnight, as it tries to make comparisons between firmware version numbers to see whether that installed in your Mac is older or more recent that the version number it expects.
