Two movie-related things I don't understand:

1) people who go to bad movies to participate in mass heckling / mockery

2) people who go to live MST3K screenings to hear people "riff" (that is, read prepared jibes) along with a movie

If I had to choose one of the two hells, it would be the second — easily, but both sound awful.

I guess this is why I am more of a #Rifftrax guy these days. Seems to more capture the spirit of original #MST3K. Just a bunch of midwest weirdos poking fun of Hollywood still to this day.

But I’ll never say no to more MST3K and this deal is promising that, so let’s see where it goes. Even seasons 11-13 have some classics (Cry Wilderness, Doctor Mordrid, Mac & Me, plus more).

Keep circulating the tapes.

On the other hand, what made those first 10 season of #MST3k special was the punk, DIY aesthetic. A bunch of weirdos from the midwest throwing together a little show about Hollywood's worst mistakes. Joel kind of lost that with the reboot seasons and have even less faith in Radial getting that back.

And I especially worry now that a studio owned by a conglomerate owns the franchise with what they will do with all the free content of the show and the sharing that was part of that punk ethos.

As a long time #MST3K head (I literally circulated VHS tapes as a teenager), I’ve got some pretty mixed feelings on this. Joel took a lot of money from fans to buy back the rights to the show, and again to make a “home” for it with the Gizmoplex and now he’s just selling it off to Shout!’s parent company.
