@mike @mycroft_ai Hello - I'd love to know if you got any further? I got my #Mycroft #MarkII a few weeks back, and have some time over the holidays to try messing around with it. I've followed the porting the hello world skill guide but struggling to figure out what my next step should be.
@JoeRess I've been wanting to build smart speakers with SBCs because of their form factor. The problem I've run into (other than availability) is just getting audio peripherals that work without standing on top of any device. There's a lot of support from #Mycroft for Pi based devices since the #MarkI and #MarkII are both Pi based devices. A mini PC would work fine for this as well, but I don't want USB devices hanging off it everywhere. The "appliance" device is more what I'm looking for.
@welllschmaltz It’s great to hear about local assistant options, especially as a Home Assistant user. I was already looking at the #Mycroft #MarkII so now I wonder how they might interoperate. The article says that Home Assistant’s scope will be limited, so perhaps they can fill some of each other’s gaps.

IT'S FINALLY HERE!! The initial run of the #Mycroft #MarkII was almost flawless with a couple bumps I'm sure the good people at @mycroft_ai didn't anticipate for obvious reasons. The setup was almost anticlimactic because I just plugged it in and it was working perfectly within minutes, despite weird circumstances. Now, we just need to get this thing so it'll run 100% offline. That would have saved me some time and effort. 😉

@joanisc An actual #MarkII, probably not. The best you can probably get is installing Mycroft on a Linux system. The speaker/microphone on the Mark II should be tuned to not suffer from the surrounding noise issues, so if you test it on the computer and write off any audio issues you may have with speaker/microphone, you can get a good idea of it's capabilities. That's assuming you're willing to assume they didn't make any mistakes with audio tuning.
@Tay0 Yea, the #MarkI is going for the same price as the #MarkII right now. The Mark I is super hard to get and pretty rare since they haven't been made for a long time. You're going to have to wait a couple months (even though they're shipping now) if you want to buy one new, but you'll get the newer hardware. The Mark II is based around a Pi4, so you can literally plug in a monitor/keyboard/mouse to it and swap out the SD and you can have a fairly reasonable desktop computer.
