Sometimes I forget that on such an amazing planet with over 2 million amazing species that we're the ONLY ones lucky enough to have to work a job to live on it.
It took me more than a decade to select who I follow and what I mute on Twitter. I have learnt so much over the last few years, both breaking news but mostly surprising new insights, facts, knowledge.
Now still, my Twitter list is much better curated than my list on Mastodon.
But... when I see how far I got in two months on Mastodon, where it took me 10 years on Twitter, I am confident investing in this place will be worth it.

I keep imagining new instances popping up that are funded by the "industries" they cater to. For example, news organizations could pay for their own instance and people interested primarily in news could create accounts there. I recall that someone was interested in setting up an instance for unions and organized labor. Imagine a portion of union dues going towards their Masto instance. Maybe a music based instance? @alexhaist @tara I also feel hesitant at using hashtags because they feel like awkward pandering to me, like I'm begging for attention. Also because I have to think separately "okay, where can I add hashtags?", because I have zero sense for what should have hashtags.
For example, should I hashtag #hashtags in this message? What about #awkward? Or, if I'm feeling particularly shameless, what about #psychology, #fedithoughts, #mastothoughts?
Or maybe I'm just #shy...?

it's so nice to engage in an actual conversation on a digital platform. it's been so long since I've felt comfortable (or like I could have a productive convo) doing it!
I'm curious what contributes to that, though. smaller overall community? some shared norms across connected instances? more limited reach of posts, through organic networks? better per-post privacy controls? server blacklisting?
some of these are product choices within mastodon. some may be fleeting with scale.
Had a very busy week at work. Luckily, it's weekend and time to relax.

I think that I am establishing an emotional bond to #mastodon. As a 33 years old #geek, this confusionary environment of anonymous profiles, instances with bizarre names and geeky bots reminds me the internet of the mid 2000s. The linux install parties in Roman community centers, the hackmeetings, the KDE-Gnome fanboys/fangirls controversies, the guys sporting out their slackware distros on old acer laptops.
The way we did computing before the social nighmare: dirty, confusionary, kiddish, dark-themed. And meaningful.
This whole Instance thing can be confusing, and tedious, but Iβm into the idea of have separate spaces that you can access at a click from one app. Itβd be nice if you could carry over profiles and profile settings, though. #mastothoughts
