This is my only #Mathematics publication so far, but I am proud of it. It explores the domains of validity of approximations of the Fermi-Dirac distribution. It's a rich space as temperature T, mass m and chemical potential μ all compete. #Science #Physics #MathSky 🧪⚛️🧮 DOI: doi.org/10.1007/s107...

Domains of interest spanned in the
(T/m, Δμ/m=(μ-m)/m)-plane, top for three dimensional and bottom frame for two dimensional systems: Sommerfeld expansion (blue), Boltzmann approximation (lined purple), and the new Theorem 5 domain (dotted green). Solid black contours show the number of particles per de Broglie volume Eq. 1.

Nicușor Dan, the new president-elect of #Romania, is also a mathematician with 2 Olympiad gold medals (1987-88). He competed among Fields medalists Ngô Bảo Châu, Terence Tao, Stanislav Smirnov, and Elon Lindenstrauss. Wowza. #Science #Mathematics #MathSky 🧪🧮

Had a go at the @TMiP animation challenge for May!

Well, the prompt was "Pythagoras" so I couldn't not, could I?

I'm enjoying this trend in social media in #Physics and #Mathematics of "Noether-posting." #Science #MathSky 🧪⚛️🧮

A puzzle for students of all ages.

#RecreationalMath #iTeachMath #MathSky

8 squares are arranged in a figure.

6 of those squares form a 2x3 rectangle. An additional square is placed on each 3-unit side.

Place the numbers 1-8 in the squares such that no two consecutive numbers are touching…even diagonally.

This week, I recorded 4 new #VisualAlgebra YouTube videos on group actions. I heavily use the following concepts: 1. G-sets 2. Action graphs 3. Group switchboards 4. Fixed point tables. Interested? I'll give you a preview here. Please share! #MathSky 🧵👇1/16

Three actions of D₄: on itself by multiplication, on itself by conjugation, and on its subgroups by conjugation. Action graphs of each are shown.

The totally antisymmetric Levi-Civita tensor ε^(αβγδ) has two conventions:
(A) ε^(0123) = +1
(B) ε_(0123) = +1

The physics textbooks Schwartz, Peskin & Schroeder, Itzykson & Zuber, and Jackson use (A) while Bjorken & Drell, and Wald use (B). Quite annoying! #Science #Physics #MathSky 🧪⚛️🧮

In 1947, E. Post explored a suggestion made by A. Church regarding a problem stated by A. Thue about words in semigroups. The idea was to provide a reduction of the Halting Problem of Turing machines to the Word Problem in semigroups. + 🧵 #mathsky

Do you folks know about good examples of Fitting subgroups or some references for them? (I mean, besides dihedral groups) PS: I wish group theory books had more examples of such interesting groups and subgroups. #mathsky

limonade #mathsky

Commutative diagrams for a monad, where the functors are replaced by lemons. The number of lemons indicates the number of compositions for the same functor. Lemons are also used at the natural transformation level.
