a while ago i got taken aback by the tone of messagease subscription model announcement (alerts interrupting you often, “pay up or else”, the keyboard could have used a lot of improvements (emoji selection was really bad) but seemed to stagnate)
i tried a few alternatives, even tried my hands at 8vim which i like a lot for writing prose but is not great at punctuation, numbers, special characters, etc.
and then i found #flickboard (by @natkr ) and it's great, it has copied and then surpassed message-ease (emoji selection is good now!)

anyway, try it out if you are a #messagease refugee, or if you want a non-frustrating keyboard (hit me up for advice on speed-running the steep learning curve)
What a nice time for #MessagEase refugees. Not only #ThumbKey is getting into shape, apparently there's also #Flickboard that's also OSS despite being missing from F-Droid

I’ve been using Messagease for years as my phone keyboard, keeping an old .apk while it became "pay-to-use".
I’m glad to say that Thumb-key by @dessalines is now working even better than the original Messagease. Give it a try!
@wolfar @wthinker Как ни странно — но #thumbkey :-( Несмотря на то, что это вроде как копия #MessagEase, от юзабилити последней там вообще ничего нет. То ли я еще не «поймал» родные для меня параметры, то ли что - но так и не научился даже трех слов связать без опечаток.
Я не имею в виду, что попутать я с е — это типа опечатка. Мой фейл, не вопрос. Потому что наблепда ← набираю я в таком режиме, когда ошибка — стиравледаы ← стираем всё, пишем заново. То ли сенсор стерся, то ли что....
Вот така хуйня...

Elle inclut entre autres mon commit de layout FR qui apporte plus de simplicité aux caractères de ponctuation « » ’ · ¨ *
Sur la capture d’écran, il y a d’encadré en rouge les caractères de différence par rapport au layout Français de base.

I'm casually exploring alternatives to QWERTY keyboards on my smartphone.
Some keyboard apps seem to want payment before I get to try. Others want permission to use personal data unrelated to typing.
The #MessagEase keyboard with only 9 buttons is intriguing, but I'd want to try before I pay.
The #Microsoft keyboard app wants to collect Location #data. How would that improve the app's typing performance?
My keyboarding exploration continues.

@AdmNelson Ну, как бы, с одной стороны — никто тебе бесплатно ничего делать не должен. Особенно если там бэкенд, который надо поддерживать постоянно.
Но вот как в случае с #MessagEase — подписка на клавиатуру — вот это дичь.

My favourite input method on mobile/tablets has gone payware.
I've been using #messagease since the palm days and while the keyboard app has slowly decayed over the decades, it's still been mostly okay. The core idea is so much better than emulating a qwerty.
On wednesday, I uninstalled it on all my devices and while it hurts, I will not support this kind of action by a developer.
This, guys, is how you breed resentment among your users. Give them something for free and then take it away.

C'est dispo sur #fdroid et ça marche très bien. Je n'ai cependant pas encore trouvé comment faire les caractères spéciaux que j'arrive à faire avec MessageEase. Il semble que les swipes "aller-retour" ne marchent pas (encore?).
For followers who do not know what my previous boosts are about: Since many years, I have been a fan of the #MessagEase keyboard, which is designed for a handheld touchscreen, unlike the qwerty #keyboard that is designed for a typing machine.
Sadly, the development of MessagEase was stopped a while ago.
Now, @dessalines took up this job and is making what is now called #thumbkey an even greater, open source, #privacy-friendly keyboard!
Go give it a try, find it on F-Droid or google play!

Meet Thumb-Key, the best keyboard ever! The "spiritual successor" of MessagEase, this keyboard uses a 3*3 layout for the 26 letters plus a handful of symbols!
The 9 most common letter, ANIHORTES, are one tap away. Tap its grid once and the letter is typed. For the remaining 17 letters, the letter can be typed with a flick/swipe. For example, to type M, just swipe towards the left from R.
This solves the problem of fat fingers mistapping without relying on autocorrect. Do give it a try if you find this keyboard cool!
