Black Narcissus Review by Scott Yanow

This Milestone LP (which has been included in Joe Henderson's eight-CD Milestone set) is a bit of a mixed bag. The tenor recorded four numbers with pianist Joachim Kuhn's trio in Paris and later had percussion and Patrick Gleeson's synthesizer overdubbed. In addition there is the odd "Amoeba" (which finds Henderson doubling on synth himself) along with a superior version of "Good Morning Heartache" featuring Henderson, Kuhn, bassist Dave Friesen and drummer Jack DeJohnette.

Next Album is an album by jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, his first to be released on the Milestone label, featuring performances by Rollins with George Cables, Jack DeJohnette, Bob Cranshaw and Arthur Jenkins. The cover photography was credited to Chuck Stewart.

The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow states: "Sonny Rollins first album after ending his six-year retirement is a particularly strong effort. The highpoint is a ten-minute version of 'Skylark' that has a long unaccompanied section by the great tenor." - Wikipedia

Mean What You Say is an album by the Thad Jones/Pepper Adams Quintet recorded in 1966 and released on the Milestone label.

Scott Yanow of Allmusic called the band a "high-quality hard bop unit" and stated "Jones and Adams always made for a potent team, but the rise of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra meant that this particular quintet only lasted a short time" - Wikipedia

...Where Would I Be? is an album by guitarist Jim Hall which was recorded in 1971 and first released on the Milestone label.

AllMusic awarded the album 3 stars and its review by Scott Yanow states "Although the rhythm section was more "modern" than he usually used (keyboardist Benny Aronov, bassist Malcolm Cecil, and Airto Moreira on drums and percussion), guitarist Jim Hall (who always had a harmonically advanced style anyway) has little difficulty adapting to the fresh setting" - Wikipedia

Night cap: McCoy Tyner Fly with the Wind. I'm usually skeptical of strings arrangements on jazz records but it works here. Billy Cobham is a beast on drums, accentuating Tyner's piano flashes. #jazz #MilestoneRecords

#NowPlaying Joe Henderson - Canyon Lady (Milestone, US 1975).

Joe Henderson with a large ensemble featuring Luis Gasca, Julian Priester and George Duke, among many others.

Not an essential Henderson record in my opinion but nonetheless, there are fine moments on the album.
