<p class="has-drop-cap">The skies over Badoc, Ilocos Norte, were flighty in the morning, as soldiers from the Philippine Marines’ 4th Marine Brigade converged at the town’s port for an amphibious drill, their first after weeks of lectures.</p>

<p>“Any alibis?” an officer asked as the trainees assembled for a safety briefing.</p>

<p>Alibi, in Marines parlance, means any valid reason to skip a mission — a fever, a cold, or a body part still sore from previous training drills. There were no alibis offered this morning, only eyes ahead of drills on nearby Badoc Island.</p>

<p>The class is the first batch from the <a href="https://www.rappler.com/newsbreak/in-depth/philippine-marines-4th-brigade-comes-home/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">4th Marine Brigade</a>, which is based some 67 kilometers north of Badoc, in the town of Burgos, to undergo special operation training (SOP) after it was made mandatory for the 10,000-strong corps. It was a diverse class — from a 46-year-old veteran in the corps to a green-horned soldier assigned to an admin position in the brigade.</p>

<p>The training is meant to make the corps “the most ready.”</p>
