#ModelFLabs

So with a repair kit - which seems reasonable since it's a limited production - and shipping, I'm looking at around $550 for a classic #ModelF keyboard from #ModelFLabs. And that's before dealing with import fax and fees. That's a hefty sum for a keyboard, even if it's in a solid metal case and goes CLICK when you poke it. But it's just so damned delicious.

I just ordered the New Model M keyboard from #Unicomp Inc. a couple of day ago, but now I'm thinking I may have jumped the gun. People in the know are saying that the original #IBM Model Ms were developed to cut down on cost compared to the previous #ModelF keyboards. Corners were cut - everything from changing the frame from metal to plastic and simplifying the buckling spring mechanics of the keys, sacrificing durability and losing the "right click sound". Unicomp is churning out Ms on an old production line they took over from #Lexmark and keeping units at around $125. At the other end of the scale, Joe Strandberg of #ModelFLabs has started up a brand new production line for his Model F clones. At $399 it's more than three times the price of the Unicomp New #ModelM, and while I realize it's damned close to religion, I'm also very very intrigued. I'll let you know if this is going to happen.

And now to something complete different, this time for the #MechanicalKeyboard crowd: One and a half week ago a new gem arrived: My Round 1 "Brand New #BeamSpring #SSK" by #ModelFLabs.

A few days ago I found the leisure to complete the setup as documented on modelfkeyboards.com/manual/#el (although I didn't find a single non-working key). Using it as my daily driver for now. So far it feels and sounds great!

No sound sample here as my phone's mic wasn't able to properly catch that nice bassy sound.

A brand new Beam Spring SSK Keyboard (SSK = Space Saving Keyboard aka TKL = Ten-Key-Less layout) by "New Model F Keyboards". It has a black-on-white alphanumeric keys and white on black modifier keys with keycaps shaped similar to the SA profile, but lower and with more prolific rims. The case is rather simplistic and has a rough, black and complete flat surface, kinda comparable with a brick.
