First significant update to my #Preonic #mechanicalKeyboard “Bucktooth” layout. After 10 years of reaching too far for the -/_ and =/+ keys I am trying out a new layout where I put them on the bottom row where I had the exclusive space bar keys (the exaggerated color in some keycap colorways and different keycap shapes for the two space keys inspired the name “bucktooth”) . The top row keycap profile used now on the bottom row is not as nice as the rounded top space keys (available in VERY FEW keysets!) but are still good for my thumbs to easily home on them and frankly means a lot more keysets will work with Bucktooth 2 layouts. Still using a mislabeled backtick/tilde key here in the third row but not planning to change that anytime soon because the symmetry of backtick and forward tick next to each other is so good.
The trsdeoff and learning curve is that to actually hit - and = I need to use the fn key with them which is a violation of the design parameter for the original Bucktooth layout of “all printable ASCII on the base layer” …but the reach for those top middle keys was causing me to move my wrists, which basically defeats the primary purpose of using Bucktooth. I used to use Dvorak keysets that let me put - on row 3 but those are hard to find and while sure I can touch-type, I kind of hated how most keysets looked with the - on row 3 and = on row 1 next to a differently colored backtick. Now backtick lives on row 3 next to apostrophe or “forward tick” hahah
Shown here is my portable BT Preonic by Keyboardio (white) with the key swap between the space bar locations and the older Bucktooth 1A locations in the center of the top row, and one of my older Bucktooth boards with - on row 3 and backtick on row 1; note the colorway discrepancies where the keyset tries to color keys that are on the edge of the US English layout differently, like modifiers.
