#MulticellularBacteria Evolve Defenses that Resemble the Immune System the-scientist.com/multicellula

Targeted hypermutation of putative antigen sensors in multicellular bacteria pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pnas.

"the team chose pink berries, which are millimeter sized aggregates of #bacteria living on the floor of #SaltMarshes in #WoodsHole, #Massachusetts that tend to evolve slowly... they’re wild, but they’re not so ephemeral and changing that we can’t ask mechanistic questions"

Another example of #MulticellularBacteria, this time from the open ocean:

Perhaps it’s quite common, but we’re just not used to looking?

Paper: Novel multicellular #prokaryote discovered next to an #underground stream elifesciences.org/articles/719

How life went from one cell to #multicellular is a hotly debated topic among #scientists... A #limestone #cave in the northern #Kyushu Island of #Japan was hiding one clue: a fascinating new organism!

Illustration of the newly described bacteria life cycle. (A) Coccobacilli cells start colony formation. (B) Cells start elongating to become filamentous (in yellow). Filamentous HS-3 organizes itself like a liquid crystal. (C) The colony becomes a single layer of filamentous cells and stops growing for 2-3 days. (D) After growth arrests, cells in the center of the colony begin proliferating as coccobacilli (in purple), forming a 3-D structure in the center. (E) Upon submersion in water, the coccobacilli in the center are promptly released, leaving the filamentous cells behind. These newly released coccobacilli may give rise to new colonies, beginning the multicellular lifestyle anew.
