More Lava Cave stuff!! "Drip Stalagmite"
This formed as things cooled, and the ceiling dripped cooling lava happily in a spot to make us a type of stalagmite.

#lava #geology #rock #cave #caves #caving #photography #nature

A stalagmite that has a rope like appearance in that it kinda looks like someone made it of really thick sillystring. The textures are maintained of the "ropey drips" of lava which you can see scattered into the background, but in the foreground built up about a foot high stalagmite. There is some yellow color, which is from bacteria most likely.

I got a "critters" and an "everything lava tube" answer. So enjoy this one from a lava tube cave in Oregon: it is a Harvestman, Taracus marchingtoni

#cave #caves #caving #nature #science #biology #harvestman #entomology #critters

On some lava with a layer of organics (bacteria?) is a side view from an upward angle of harvestman which kinda look like spiders but they aren't, it's body is white but it has two long dark things sticking out the front which are called chelicerae. These are usually about as long or even longer than it's body! The same critter from the last, but now we have a more rear and low angled view showing off better the spindly legs and how crazy long the chelicerae are as they are highlighted better against the dark rock in this image.

Well...I cannot say I am pleased about iNaturalist partnering with Google to develop GenAI. While what iNat would like to do would be incredibly helpful, it can be done by other means (namely, uh, volunteer or employed actual experts?). My main concerns are simple, and yet, unaddressed by the iNaturalist post about this project:
1) How can we be assured that our data that we share with iNaturalist will NOT be shared with Google; as if anything it seems to suggest free sharing between iNat and Google to develop things using Google's GenAI; thus Google does have access even if indirectly.
2) Will we have an opt-out option, so our data is not used in this project

In the end, nature is about community, not machines. And I do not consent to feeding any of my data into Google's GenAI for any purpose.

UPDATE: They updated their post ( inaturalist.org/posts/113184-i), and some of my worries are alleviated; namely, Google will not have access to our data from them and they are under no obligation to use Google's infrastructure. However, I still am dubious...for a few reasons which I won't elaborate here. There is a Q&A upcoming.

Photo is one that was used in a presentation, and one of the questions asked by a 60-something year old Doctor of Biology was "That photo is so good! Is it AI?" :blobfacepalm:

#nature #iNat #iNaturalist #AI #google #community #communityScience #science #biology #ecology #cave #photography

A photo, apparently so good it should be AI. The view is looking down into a pit, backlit from below which makes clear crisp highlights of the rock layers. Close to the entrance there is green highlighted due to the moss on the limestone. A rope hangs down, and a person in white helmet and shirt is attached to it, climbing. They lean back (towards the bottom of the image) to look up at the camera and smile. The dynamic lighting and clean lines and composition I guess is too good to be true. How sad is that?

I thought I'd seen this movie, but I don't have a personal rating on IMDb for it, so I guess I'll have to watch it again.

It's The Descent (2004). It has a 7.2 rating on IMDb and is free to stream on Tubi and Freevee.

Filmed in Scotland, "a caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators."

It stars Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid, Saskia Mulder, MyAnna Buring, & Nora-Jane Noone.

Written/directed by Neil Marshall.

Music by David Julyan, who also composed the music for The Prestige, Insomnia, and The Cabin in the Woods.

@nev asked if I'd ever been in a lava tube, and the answer is yes, multiple times! Lava tube caves are cool, and are varied in size, shape, and formations, just like limestone caves. Here is a photo in a lava tube cave with my little bat buddy for scale to show some of the variety of textures and colors that can be found. If ya'all like this, I can post some lava tube cave geology / formation type stuff! Comment to let me know what you'd like to see...passage? formations? critters that call these places home?
#geology #volcano #lava #rock #cave #caves #caving #photography #nature

In the middle a small 6" stuffed bat sits on some lava rock. Every section of the photo has different textures left on the passage from how the lava was flowing, dripping, and moving. The ceiling kinda looks like stucco, and has grays and oranges and reds. The right wall high up looks like neurons creating a maze of paths. Mid right wall has circular lines. The floor almost looks like sand in texture and color, but it's not, it's hard as well, rock!

Sobre todo creo que
No todo está perdido
Tanta lágrima, tanta lágrima
Y yo, soy un vaso vacío

Clavo mi remo en el agua
Llevo tu remo en el mío
Creo que he visto una luz
Al otro lado del río

On a boat tour of the rivers and limestone caves of Tràng An in Ninh Bình province, #Vietnam. Thinking of this image today as we row through darkness, seeking the light.

Photo taken on a river in the interior of a partially submerged cave, looking towards a distant jagged-edged opening. A rowboat with passengers sits in silhouette at the opening, while another boat ahead of it is fully in the light. A green jungle can be glimpsed beyond, and reflected sunlight plays on the river’s rippling waves. The rest of the image is plunged in darkness.

A large passage with breakdown floor somewhere in Tennessee.

#cave #caves #caving #nature #photography #explore #science #geology #alttext

A person in a red cave oversuit and helmet with light on stands on a boulder just below middle of the photo. The ceiling is clearly at least 30 ft / 10m above them, if not more, and gets larger beyond where they stand as it fades into darkness. The ceiling is mostly smooth with patches of different coloration of limestone, some more gray and some more reddish. The walls show various layers, again some more red and some more gray. The floor is simply boulders and rock, ranging from basketball to a small vehicle in size.

I missed International Cave Day because I was actually underground instead of on the Internet.

A large passage window to an open air pit entrance to a cave system. We can see a rope hanging as a line of white just right of center. There is greenery in the pit from moss and ferns. A lone caver traverses across wearing a bright red pack and helmet - they are tiny and show the scale of this cave.
