Tom Malinowski concedes last week's #NJ11 primary to Analilia Mejia, the progressive activist who pulled off a big upset. Mejia will be the favorite in April 16 special general election for a seat that, per calculations by the Downballot, Kamala Harris carried 53-45.

INBOX: the Democratic National Committee is forced to delete a premature congratulatory message to former Rep. Tom Malinowski in the #NJ11 special election primary to succeed Gov. Mikie Sherrill this morning. DSA member Analilia Mejia, running on abolishing ICE, took the lead late last night.

Tonight, Democrat Tom Malinowski clinched victory in the New Jersey District 11 special election Democratic primary. The seat was formerly held by Governor Mikie Sherrill, who made history last November when she became the first Democratic woman governor in New Jersey history after running a campaign focused on affordability and handily beating Trump’s hand-picked candidate.

While Republicans continue to hemorrhage support as Trump’s deeply unpopular policies raise costs on New Jersey families, the DNC is all-in to support Malinowski, who will protect health care, lower costs, and build a more affordable New Jersey.

In response to Tom Malinowski’s victory, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:

“Tom Malinowski ran an exceptional primary campaign focused on what New Jersey families care most about, from the rising cost of groceries and utilities to the health care crisis unleashed by Donald Trump and Republicans. Garden Staters feel the pain of Trump and Republicans’ affordability crisis and deserve leaders like Malinowski who will fight to lower their costs and increase opportunity. Malinowski has the experience to serve New Jersey once again. From now until Election Day, while Republicans are on defense as their approval rating tanks, the DNC will be on offense, going all-in to support Malinowski to ensure New Jerseyans have a leader who will stand up for them, not Donald Trump.”

Democrats in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District will pick their nominee on Thursday—yes, Thursday—in the crowded and expensive primary for the seat that Mikie Sherrill gave up following her election as governor last year.

The winner will be the favorite against Randolph Mayor Joe Hathaway, who has the Republican side to himself, in the April 16 special election for this reliably blue North Jersey constituency.

Of the 11 Democrats in the race, five have attracted the most attention from donors and prominent backers. Former Rep. Tom Malinowski, who lost reelection in 2022 in the neighboring 7th District, has outraised his opponents, but he’s also been the target of heavy attacks, including from the hawkish pro-Israel group AIPAC.

Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill and venture capitalist Zach Beecher have also brought serious sums, while former Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way has benefited from considerable outside spending.

Progressive activist Analilia Mejia, finally, is at a financial disadvantage, but she’s hoping her allies—including the labor-backed Working Families Party and prominent figures on the left like Sen. Bernie Sanders—will help her stand out in this packed race.
