You've forgotten /etc/nsswitch.conf .
Check whether hostname to address lookup in your C library is consulting something else before it consults the DNS.

#linux #nsswitch
@wolf480pl Also, if using #mDNS / #Zeroconf / #Bonjour, make sure that any address resolution software or facility (such as #NSCd and #NSSwitch ) are set so that “minimal mDNS” is queried before DNS and returns when things are not found, before passing on to DNS of course. This is mostly the default, but it's better to check.
hey mastodon, what is a "map" in the context of nsswitch?
Context:
Any user changes to nsswitch maps must be done in file {AUTHSELECT_CONFIG_DIR}/user-nsswitch.conf. When authselect generates new _nsswitch.conf_ it reads this file and combines it with configuration from selected profile. The profile configuration takes always precedence. In other words, profiles do not have to set all nsswitch maps but can set only those that are relevant to the profile.
