#Nehru

Had a comment left on my site where I have some scans of photos taken by my grandad when he was stationed out in Singapore during and after World War II. I hadn't realised until the comment pointed it out that he was clearly there when Indian Nationalist leader Nehru came to visit and inspect the troops, making this 1946.

A scan of a black and white photo showing its age as it was taken in the 1940s. We're at a reasonably high angle, as if in a nearby building or in a grandstand, and we're looking down at a bare concrete space. Two rows of solders all wearing turbans are spaced apart and facing away from us. They're all standing to attention as a dignitary in white clothing and a matching, smart Gandhi cap hat walks past to inspect them. Another soldier is to his side and they're followed by another military person in a ceremonial white uniform.

Today we celebrate #Ambedkar who "understood with piercing clarity the dangers posed by religious majoritarianism and upper-caste dominance. Unlike his contemporaries ( #Gandhi , #Nehru), who placed their faith in moral appeals or modernisation, Ambedkar insisted on enforceable constitutional safeguards and institutional protections. He was unsparing in his critique — not only of Hindu orthodoxy - but also of nationalist icons who ignored the plight of the oppressed."

#Nehru the man who took care of the newly independent country India. Who laid down the foundation of all the institutions that exist in India today. Whose wide vision made India what it is today. And also the irony of a country which is ready to forget its most finest leader just 5 decades after he is gone. Someday we will lose what is valuable and then only know how valuable it was. Happy birthday Nehru ji
