I was walking home from school one day in 1983, and as I rounded the corner onto Fifth Street, I saw workers loading rows of fold-down seats from the demolished Earle Theater onto a truck. They were being saved to be reused, and I asked one of the men if I could have one. He told me to wait while he went inside the building. He emerged carrying a pair of seats, still bolted together. They were too heavy for me, so I got a friend to help me carry them to my house.

Exceprt from a book of local history of New Castle, Delaware. The photo shows the partially demolished Earle Theater building on Fifth and Delaware Streets in 1983.

According to notes my mother wrote on the boxes, these 126mm slides were taken by my brother in 1977-78, using the little point-and-click camera that we had. All of these are within about a block of the house where we grew up. It's fascinating for me, and very affecting, to see the landscape of my childhood preserved from the viewpoint of a child.

Slightly blurry and faded color transparency image looking down the street past a house with a brick porch. A white, picket fence stands with the gate open. A dusting of snow covers the brick sidewalk.Slightly dark color transparency image, camera held at a slight angle, looking down a wide alley with garages along one side. Kids of a certain age will spot the Marx Big Wheel in the open garage to the right.Slightly blurry, faded color transparency image looking down Fifth Street in New Castle, Delaware past the Library. The post office and old Earle Theater can be seen to the left.Slightly dark color transparency image of two children. One is sitting on a ridable John Deere tractor toy while the other stands. Nothing quite captures childhood in Old New Castle in this period like kids with paper cones of Rosati water ice, purchased at Wassams.
