I love walking and shooting in wetland areas.  The wildlife you can see in them plays a significant role in that love, and the birds there are a significant part of the wildlife.

The focus today is on the larger birds, and here we have representation from a Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, and Canada Geese.

Duck (noun): Any of various swimming birds in which the neck and legs are short, the feet typically webbed, the bill often broad and flat, and the sexes usually different from each other in plumage

Duck (verb): To lower the head or body suddenly

Here we have some of the nouns verbing themselves.  ;)

I took a walk through the Union Bay Natural Area at the Center for Urban Horticulture recently, and brought my long lens along 'just in case'.  It's a good location for spotting birds of all sorts and, though we're not into migration season yet, I thought I might get lucky.

Friends, I think I did.  :)

This pair of Bald Eagles were in the wetlands portion of the natural area, perched in two different trees near each other.  Given the time of year and their difference in size, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a mated pair with a nest in the area somewhere.  I hope to see them next time I'm there, and I'll be bringing that long (and heavy, oof) lens with me for sure.

Today is Lunar New Year and it is the year of the Fire Horse.  I do not have any photos of horses *on* fire (good!), or made *of* fire (which would be cool), so can I interest you in a photo of horses made *with* fire?

Taken over a decade ago, this photo is of a steel sculpture called Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies, by artist David Govedare, and it is located at the top of a hill near Vantage, Washington, above the Columbia River.  From the interstate, and the parking area at the foot of the hill, it looks like a line of horses running along the top of the ridge.  A short hike will bring you up and gives you angles like this from which to admire them.

On Saturday I met some friends at the Conservatory in Seattle's Volunteer Park.  It was a cool, dreary, gray winter day, with rain spitting down on and off, which made the warmth of the greenhouse all the more pleasant.

(Cross-posted from my site, where you can see the additional photo: andrewflenniken.com/2026/02/10)

It had been a few years since I'd last visited, and I'd forgotten how serene the conservatory is on a day like that.  If you live nearby, or have something similar in your area, it's a good break if winter gloom is getting you down.

I didn't get a shot outside, so I've included one I took in a different winter a few years ago, when it was snowing.

Despite having lived here for 13 years now, I only recently visited the Central Library in downtown Seattle for the first time.  It is a fantastic building, architecturally, inside and out.  It is also a wonderful library: so many places to sit and read or quietly work.

(Cross-posted from my site: andrewflenniken.com/2026/02/03)

I explored from bottom to top and at the highest point, in a particularly quiet and secluded place where you can look all the way to the bottom of the atrium, I found poetry.  You kind of expect to find poetry in a library, but not quite like this.

Who knows how long it will stay there.  I'm sure someday it will be cleaned away but with this photo, at least, we'll remember it was there.

Color photo. Two mailing labels, white with a thin blue and red strip along the top, pasted next to each other on a metal railing. On them has been written a poem: I miss my mothers cold arms that knew only to survive. Love was merely a tolerance to keep. I grew and grew, only knowing how to be dependant. Looking for love became a selfish act unlike the nature that surrounds my heart and soul, from which I foolishly didn't learn from. And now I sit here finally growing into my own arms so that I too can warm you one day again. Jose D A

Lots of cold, bright mornings around here lately, which means I've been waking up to sights like this.  Frost on the grass, spinning the sunlight into glistening fragments, like tiny glowing gems: sapphire, ruby, emerald.

I took these on New Year's Eve while walking through Seattle on my way to a party. I appreciated how the fog worked with the lights; completely obscuring those further away, while making those close by stand out. Maybe that's the takeaway for the times ahead. In the dark and fog the light closest to you, that you *can* see, matters even more.

The last day of 2025 is here.

Three years ago some friends of mine went out for trivia on a Monday night.  Initially, they struck out.  The place they'd chosen was packed by the time they arrived, no room for another team to join.  Undeterred, a search was made for somewhere else hosting trivia that same evening.

They found The Waterwheel, the chillest dive bar ever, with a game excellently created and hosted by Leland Hirschman.

Full post, with an additional photo, on my site: andrewflenniken.com/2025/12/31

Back at the end of October I had the pleasure of working with No Refunds Productions once more, shooting the dress rehearsal for their most recent play "Sunset People".

The place I do trivia on Monday nights was very, very full yesterday. I try to get there about 45 minutes before the game starts, since that’s before the rest of the crowd arrives and there are still tables available. Not so this last time! I ended up getting a seat at the bar and my team played from there.

This did put me next to the taps and, since it was a busy night, the glassware piled up at one point, which drew my eye. It also put me next to the team that brings their dog every week. 🙂

I haven't been getting out much to shoot recently, despite Autumn being my favorite time of the year.  November started, the clouds returned, daylight savings time ended and all of this hit me like a hammer.  Top it off with the head cold I'm dealing with right now and all I feel up to is huddling in my room doing, well, not much of anything really.

(Cross-posted from my site, where there are additional photos: andrewflenniken.com/2025/11/21)

I managed to gather up enough energy to go out and get these shots one one of the last sunny days we had, before most of the leaves were down.  We've definitely progressed from Fall to Fell now, though, and I'm trying to look forward to more holiday lights going up in the coming weeks.

Speaking of!  Now's a very good time to be thinking of giving the gift of art to someone you love for the holidays.  ;)  I have a wide range of shots available in my site's Print Store, and I'll be adding some more soon!

As I did last year, I accompanied some friends out to the Olympic Peninsula to catch the tail end of autumn.  On our previous trip we bumped into some folks collecting chantarelle mushrooms, and we came prepared to get a huge haul like they'd had.

So, of course, we barely found any.  Ah well.

It was cloudy and drizzly, typical weather for the time of year, but that worked for me just fine.  The colors popped, the clouds were low enough to play with the mountain tops, and the rain stayed away long enough for me to take some photos to bring back to you.  :)

Happy Halloween!

I took this shot up at Tipsoo Lake the other week and, as soon as I did, I knew it would be the photo I'd post today.  Is it a traditionally Halloween image?  Nope, at least not in the modern "fun spooky" sense.  In the dark, brooding Gothic sense?  Yes, to me it is.

A few more from my trip to Mount Rainier National Park a couple of weeks ago.

(Cross-posted from my site, where you can view the additional photos: andrewflenniken.com/2025/10/28)

Since the road up to Sunrise was already closed I went to the White River campground instead.  Most of it was already closed as well, but the day-use area wasn't and it's right next to the river which suited my purposes nicely.  I wanted to get some shots of the riverbed receding off into the distance towards the mountain with the source of the river, the Emmons Glacier, visible.

Which I got!  Please enjoy them.  :)

I've also included a color version of one of last week's shots.  I think it works equally well in color; it's just great in a different way.

Last week was all about color, and this week is all about black & white.

(Cross-posted from my site, where there's an additional photo: andrewflenniken.com/2025/10/24)

I'm a fan of black & white photos of mountains, especially when the sky has some high wispy clouds to give it texture and interest, and Rainier really delivered.  Couple that with white snow around the lake, dark trees, and delicious reflections of it all in the water and I was very much in my happy place.

I've got a couple more I want to share next week, so keep an eye out for them, probably Tuesday or Wednesday.

It’s been a couple of years since I made it down to Mount Rainier National Park, and I wanted to do so before they closed the highway on the east side for the winter. They’d already closed the road up to the Sunrise ranger station, sadly, as well as much of the White River campground, due to the government shutdown, but Chinook Pass was still open, so up I went.

It’s mostly pines out that way, so where there are pops of color they *really* pop. And I’m pretty sure those are larches in the photo of Tipsoo Lake with Yakima Peak rising up behind. Their crowns are going golden, at least.

I’ll post a few more from that trip next week!
