I'm enjoying Bluesky but I must have messed up the algorithm. As far as I can tell, all 30 million Bsky users are Americans who post about the current political chaos (or science). I have to really search for the rest of the world! (And so far I can't find much.)

I simply love the stuff that shows up in my timeline, and the variety of people who respond to things I post. Speakers of other languages, people from other countries and continents, people with similarly geeky interests or hobbies, people who love their own weird hobbies, interests, or professions intensely and describe them in loving detail such that it can't help but be interesting.

"Social" means "with people". And that's what the fediverse is - people. Nothing cramming junk in your feed to manipulate into buying, no bots trying to cheat ad revenue, just ... people.

I'm thankful.

I was wondering because we always say that Mastodon does not use any algorithms, which may not be completely correct.

Fun facts: I first posted on Twitter in 2008. I had 3000 follows max last year. My most popular/viral tweet was last year during the trucker #convoy in Ottawa. 226 RTs. Since joining Mastodon in November I have 1700 followers and I’ve already managed to produce posts with more than 500 Boosts. I am #selfhosted with 3 people on my server. But tell me again how engagement on #Mastodon and the #Fediverse is not good enough for the ‘important people’.

Unlike #Twitter you don't have to worry about the overlords stopping you from moving their users out of your site. Nobody cares about trapping you in here anyways, Mastodon's here to give you a platform to make friends, stay in touch, share cool stuff, yada yada!

First, you should put all of the #hashtags you're following in your #profile, and follow the people who regularly #toot those hashtags.
Next, follow the people whose toots are frequently boosted by the people you're following (hint: If you see a boosted toot, someone you're following boosted it).
Then, whenever you see a toot that you enjoy, be sure to #favorite, #boost, and #comment on it.
And finally, keep doing all of the above on an infinite loop until your network is large enough to keep you #informed, #connected, #entertained, etc.

Remember, there's #NoAlgorithm here to show you stuff that "it thinks" you might like. You have to #TakeControl of your own destiny here. Leveraging your #CommonInterests with others is a great way to immerse yourself in any new culture, even if you don't actually know anyone there yet. If you're #friendly, #curious, and #engage enthusiastically with people here, you'll find your network growing quickly before you know it.
