Extended sandstone from Barbados.
This is a sandstone from the Eocene New Scotland Formation that has been extended and thus cut by normal faults.
These strata contain oil, which is why the contrast between grain sizes is so distinct.
Extension in an accretionary prism...
Like any #geologist I have to stop and take pictures when I see #stratigraphy . Hard to find in Japan but this is a site on the side of an ancient #fault #scarp about 10 m drop and they're preparing to build more houses. #NormalFault from the basining of Musashino Basin about 100,000 years ago. Not sure what these layers are but the red is #Kanto Loam. Also this area has a lot of #fluvial deposits.
