I've been looking into more #ttrpg #odnd retroclones recently. I've been quite an #OSE fan but reading #whiteboxFMAG got me interested, and then I started going down the "differences between using some books but not others" rabbit hole.

The thing that I found interesting, apart from the massive difference in monster power before and after Greyhawk, is how extremely similar OD&D with all books is to #ADnD. The latter has expanded detail and some extra rules but the structure is almost identical.

@Jakobphilipp I do! Deeply impressed by the #Dolmenwood Campaign setting. I also like Gavin Norman‘s version of #OSE that came with the setting material. Many cautiously implemented quality of life improvements of the venerated B/X rules chassis. So far, I only ran Dolmenwood modules. It appears to be a great game for introducing #dnd5e trad gamers to the #OSR I’m still a bit intimidated by the granular Hexcrawl procedures though.

Irgendwie brummt unser online #osr open Table gerade richtig - so zumindest mein Eindruck. 2025 gab es u.a. #Shadowdark #DCC #LiminalHorror #WolvesUponTheCoast #Warlock #Odnd #Deathbringer #Pirateborg und #OSE -Runden. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf Shadowdark, aber irgendwie verselbstständigt und differenziert sich das gerade alles aus. Wenn ihr mal reinschauen wollt, gerne bei @thorsten oder mir melden. @enfors i will run #Tannic by Amanda P. (for Basic #dnd / #OSE and #Cairn). It‘s a small Hexcrawl with a dungeon and leans into whimsical themes and forest fantasy. Good read. Curious how it holds up on the table.

It was my intention to finish my system for evolving NPC personalities and love for #SoloRPG play today, and publish it on https://ttrpg-hangout.com. But now I've gotten the idea of writing a skill system for Old School Essentials into my head too... We'll see if I can manage to do both today.

I'm trying *really hard* to not resort to making my own #TTRPG here which would take too long, and would mean that I never actually got to play. So maybe I'll just design a proper skill system for #OSE instead? That's the beauty of #TTRPGs; it's not rocket science, anybody can do do it with some effort.

I think this is what they mean when they talk about #FirstWorldProblems. 😅

I've come to realize that what I want for my #SoloRPG is a mix of Old School Essentials and... something with a proper skill system. Something where you have a number between 1 and 20 (let's say) in each skill, then you roll 1d20 and add them together to beat a DC.

#OSE is rather simple in combat, which I like (since I have multiple PCs - so even #DnD 5E combat would be too much bookkeeping). But outside of combat, #OSE isn't complex enough. x-in-6 skills aren't nearly granular enough.

I'm enjoying my #SoloRPG campaign, using the Old School Essentials ruleset. But I would enjoy it more if I managed to build a deeper connection to my characters.

For starters, I should write proper backstories for them. I'm always bad at that - it doesn't come naturally for me. I've thought about using The Adventure Crafter by @TanaPigeonWMG for it, I think that would be fun. Or perhaps I should use my own Action/Theme oracle. I don't know. Hmm.
