#OpenSourceAIDefinition

I never thought I'd see the day. The OSI openly gives credit to the FSD and links to it;

"Following the preamble is the definition of Open Source AI, an adaptation of the definition of Free Software (also known as 'the four freedoms') to AI nomenclature."

I mean, he's only doing it so that the OSI AI definition he's shilling can bask in the glory of the pioneering work, but still ...

I forgot to post my reading list last night, so here it is: Wikipedia research on rabbit holes and Australian places articles, open data can co-exist with Indigenous Data Sovereignty and combating 'open washing' with the Open Source AI Definition released.

Fun thing about the loudest critics of the #OpenSourceAIDefinition: during the fully transparent and open process leading to its result they were nowhere to be seen. Only *after* it was published they suddenly had something to say. Clickbait, much? :(

@aral

Have you seen #OSI's #OpenWashingAI definition?

It has been carefully crafted around the needs of OSI's sponsors, #Meta, #Google, #Microsoft.. that fear the #transparency requirements of the #AIAct, but are more than happy to open wash their systems, as long as they don't need to share their most valuable asset: training data.

"Let's start with some background. Lots of companies—I'm looking at you, Meta—have been claiming that their AI models are open source. They're not. They're not even close.
So the OSI and a host of other companies and groups have been working on creating a comprehensive #opensourceAIdefinition. After all, the OSI is the same organization that defines open source software with the #OpenSource Definition.
But some open source leaders already want nothing to do with it…

Classic "noise over signal"-journalism approach, including the buried lede in the last few paragraphs that would have made the opening, "Meta may think licensing should change around AI, and the OSI is about to settle the issue"

theverge.com/2023/10/30/239355

All the rest of the article quotes industry biased opinions, writing last about the #OSI working on an #OpenSourceAIdefinition. I.e., the answer for the grafs above! And settling the waters for making new licenses under the new definition.
