#OregonDunes

Caught this moment in the Christmas Valley Sand Dunes while stretching my legs during a drive south to Northern California. The filtered light, dramatic skies, and endless ripples in the sand were mesmerizing. I only had a few minutes—and the wind wasn’t exactly gentle—but I could’ve stayed for hours soaking it all in.

This area, north of Lake Abert off US 395, spans 11,000 acres and is a major draw for the OHV crowd. But even just walking a few yards into the dunes, it felt like another world.

This image captures the striking striations in wind-carved sand at the edge of the Christmas Valley Sand Dunes in Oregon’s high desert. I stopped here to stretch my legs while heading back to Northern California and was immediately drawn to the texture and lines shaped by erosion. A steady wind made it feel like I brought half the dunes back with me—sand was blowing everywhere. The moody sky came courtesy of a low-pressure system lingering with occasional showers. These dunes cover about 11,000 acres and are popular with off-highway vehicle enthusiasts.

Second image: near Florence, Oregon, served as an inspiration for Frank Herbert’s 1965 saga.

All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible. Such people have a tendency to become drunk on violence, a condition to which they are quickly addicted.
