Skye Boat Song เป็นทำนองเพลงพื้นบ้านดั้งเดิม แต่คำร้องฉบับที่คุ้นกันมากที่สุด คงหนีไม่พ้นฉบับที่เล่าถึงเหตุการณ์สมมติเรื่อง การเดินทางของ #เจ้าชายชาร์ลีสุดหล่อ (Bonnie Prince Charlie) ผู้นำทางจิตวิญญาณของกลุ่ม ที่หลบหนีจากทหารอังกฤษหลังการยุทธ์ที่ทุ่ง Culloden

สำหรับเหตุการณ์ที่นำมาสู่เรื่องราวนี้ คงต้องท้าวความตั้งแต่ประวัติศาสตร์ของบริเตนตั้งแต่ยุคพระเจ้าเสือ ถึงต้นกำเนิดของกลุ่ม Jacobite ที่เล่าได้ simplified ได้ดังนี้ (ขออนุญาตไม่ใช่ราชาศัพท์เพื่อความเข้าใจง่าย)

1. สมัยพระเจ้าเสือ อังกฤษและสกอตแลนด์ มีพระราชินีชื่อ ราชินีแอนน์ ซึ่งไม่มีลูก
2. หลังราชินีแอนน์สิ้นพระชนม์ ญาติที่ใกล้ชิดที่สุด คือ น้องชายต่างแม่ของราชินี ชื่อ James
3. แต่ James นับถือนิกาย แคทอลิก และสภาอังกฤษ ไม่ชอบแคทอลิก มากๆ จึงออกกฎหมายห้ามแคทอลิก ขึ้นเป็นกษัตริย์
4. โชคไม่ดี ที่ตอนนั้น ในราชวงศ์ โดยเฉพาะโปเจียมลำดับต้น ถือนิกายแคทอลิกกันเกือบหมด สภาอังกฤษก็ตัด candidate กษัตริย์ทุกองค์ไปหมด ข้ามสมาชิกราชวงศ์ (นับตามลำดับโปเจียม) ไปมากกว่า 20 คน จนถึง เจ้าชาย #George แห่ง Hanover เยอรมนี ที่ถือโพรเทสแทนต์ และเชิญเจ้าชายจอร์จมาเป็นกษัตริย์
5. สภาสกอตแลนด์ สนับสนุน James มากกว่า ด้วยหลายๆ เหตุผล5.1 ไม่ได้ต่อต้านแคทอลิก มากเท่า อังกฤษ5.2 George ห่างเหินจากเกาะบริเตนมาก แม้แต่ภาษาอังกฤษก็พูดไม่ได้5.3 ราชวงศ์ฝั่ง James สืบเชื้อสายมาจากราชวงศ์สกอตแลนด์ (ราชินีที่มีชื่อเสียงมากที่สุด คือ Mary, Queen of Scot)
6. กลุ่มสนับสนุน James เลยตั้งตัวเป็นกบฎ และตั้งชื่อกลุ่มของตัวเองว่า #Jacobite (เป็นภาษาละตินที่แปลว่า ผู้สนับสนุน James)
7. ต่อมาหลัง James เสียชีวิต ลูกชายของ James ชื่อ Charles (หรือ Charlie ที่มีฉายาว่า เจ้าชายชาร์ลีสุดหล่อ, ชื่อจริง Charles Edward Stuart) ก็ขึ้นมาเป็นผู้นำทางจิตวิญญาณของกลุ่ม Jacobite แทน และได้มานำทัพที่สกอตแลนด์ต่อสู้กับกองทัพอังกฤษด้วย โดยการรบที่มีชื่อที่สุด คือ การยุทธ์ที่ทุ่ง #Culloden ที่ฝ่ายอังกฤษชนะ

ความจริงเรื่องราวมีรายละเอียดเยอะกว่านี้ และความขัดแย้งมีตั้งแต่ยุคสมัยพระราชบิดาของราชินีแอนน์ แต่อาจจะเล่าแล้วยืดยาวเกินไป... ทว่าบริบทเท่านี้ น่าจะพอให้เข้าใจบางบทบางตอนของเพลง Skye Boat Song ได้บ้าง เช่น Carry the lad that's born to be king หรือวรรคสุดท้ายที่บอกกันแบบขวานผ่าซากมากว่า...

เรื่องราวช่วงก่อนการยุทธ์ที่ทุ่ง Culloden ถูกเล่าใน(นวนิยายและ)ซีรีย์อิงประวัติศาสตร์แฟนตาซี เรื่อง Outlander อันเป็นเรื่องราวของ นางเอก พยาบาลทหารในสงครามโลก ที่ย้อนเวลาไปในยุคนั้น และพบกับพระเอก #Jamie (ไม่ใช่ #Jeremy!) Fraser ดังภาพ

I did not see a French-Irish alliance on the battlefield. Ireland only stuck in memory as country of origin of that sadist pirate who later got staked in the incoming tide on Charleston's coast, or was it Wilmington.
