Getting ready to test my mod board for the #pc98. This should modify the common PC-9801-55U #SCSI card to provide an internal header, and also a built in ArdSCSIno. My goal is to reduce how much I have to beat on my poor PC-9801RA2's floppy drives. #retrocomputing #kicad

A red board carrying a SCSI controller IC, SD card slot, and internal SCSI header is sandwiched onto the top of a PC-98 SCSI card.With the header installed, the board is slightly too tall to fit into the PC-98 without removing the adjacent slot cover.Once installed, the board adds a lovely splash of colour that is blocked by the stupid and inexplicable razor-sharp structural brace holding the card cage in square.

@wyatt Also glancing from the #PC98 architecture and specific quirks that #Linux accounts for in menuconfig it's most likely not gonna be enough to "just boot the #i486 version of @OS1337"...

  • Tho given the fact this is just a #toybox + #musl / Linux Distro that is barely booting using #syslinux and able to spit out a 80x25 MDA console, it is in an early infancy.

As for the specifics of the #PC9821+ and their detailed hardware I'm clueless beyond the Wikipedia Article and can only Assume anything before a (RAM-upgraded) #9821Ap & #9801BA is off the table and a #9821Af or better is desireable as the 14,6MB RAM limit will really become a problem quickly, as I'm pretty shure it's impossible to get linux-6.6.6 run on anything below 8MB at all and most recommendations hint that 16MB is more often than not a practical limit (tho that may be becaise 10/12/14 and other "asymetric" configurations were already avoided back then)...

  • The #9821Ce should be workable in theory tho again that's just me reading a specsheet.

On the flipside I did manage to install #WindowsXP on machines with 32MB RAM and actually get them to display a desktop (abeit with seconds per frame instead of frames per second) so this is more likely a question of chipping down things.

  • Worst-Case one could see to build a bootable CD-ROM or dd something on a #BlueSCSI or similar...

@wyatt since that is an #i486-based #PC98 would you consider giving @OS1337 a shot?

If the machine has 16MB RAM and a 1440kB 3,5" FDD (or FlashFloppy/GOTEK) it should run on it.

  • It may just take ages to load & decompress the kernel & initramfs...

Got the Normal 1cc (6 initial lives) with Yuuka tonight as well! Surprisingly she's easier to clear with than Marisa for me... ​:gyate_yuuka_rember:​ That should be all 4 characters in Mystic Square cleared and their Extra stages unlocked. Can confirm the Mima Extra replay/demo being unlocked (can be seen by holding left and right arrow keys on the title screen while waiting for demo) as well ​:mimahappy:​

Touhou 5 Normal 1cc (6 initial lives) with Marisa. Just Yuuka left and I can unlock and view the Mima extra stage replay within the game! (yeah that's my motivation for clearing all four characters lol) ​:aethr_yukkuri_marisa:​

C's Ware's Gloria, #PC98 quasi-sequel to Kindan no Ketsuzoku, is now playable and more or less completable in SuperSakura's dev-branch!

Here's something different: Gate of Souls, based on Dante's Divine Comedy. It's a 1992 #PC98 action adventure by #Koei that plays a bit like Castlevania. You might describe it as "Dante goes looking for love among the circles of Hell"...

SuperSakura dev-branch can now extract many graphics from this game. In fact, with the right encoder script, you might even edit the graphics and re-insert them in the game, if there happened to be some reason for it!
