The federal student loan game just got trickier for those aiming for PSLF. The new “weighted average” rule for consolidation might reduce your qualifying payment count—especially if your largest loan hasn't made progress. Think twice before combining loans and make sure you do the math.

Heads up, borrowers working in public service: the new Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) launching in 2026 will be the main option for PSLF. Existing IDR plans are disappearing for new borrowers—and Parent PLUS loans issued after 2026 won’t qualify for forgiveness. Keep an eye on that timeline.

Republican lawmakers have proposed cutting PSLF credit for medical and dental residents. This would mean 3–7 extra years of payments for future doctors working in nonprofit hospitals. Many healthcare groups say this could lead to more staffing shortages in underserved areas. Medical education just got more expensive — and uncertain.

Just because your student loans are forgiven doesn’t mean you’re off the hook — at least not in every state.

📝 Federal law excludes forgiven student loan debt from income through 2025, but 21 states may still treat it as taxable. From PSLF to IDR plans, the rules vary.

👉 Be aware of your state’s stance, especially if you recently had debt discharged.

Can Trump reverse student loan forgiveness?

No—at least not for past forgiveness. Courts, contracts, and precedents make it nearly impossible to claw that back.

But new forgiveness? That could face big changes.

#Teachers sue #Trump admin for stopping affordable #StudentLoan repayment plans

The American Federation of Teachers represents 1.8 million educators.

By Leah Sarnoff, March 19, 2025

"One of America's largest unions is taking aim at President Donald Trump's administration for shutting down access to affordable student loan repayment plans -- saying the decision is 'effectively breaking' the system.

"The American Federation of Teachers (#AFT), representing 1.8 million educators across the country, filed a lawsuit against the #DepartmentOfEducation in Washington, D.C., hoping to restore the programs that have now been shuttered for three weeks.

"The filing alleges the administration halting the application process for all Income-Driven Repayment (#IDR) plans and ordering student loan servicers to stop all processing violates #FederalLaw.

"AFT sued the United States Department of Education (ED) for effectively breaking the student loan system, denying borrowers' access to affordable loan payments and blocking progress towards Public Service Loan Forgiveness (#PSLF), in violation of federal law,' the union said in a statement Wednesday."

🚨 **Student Loan Update** 🚨

If you're on an **income-driven repayment (IDR) plan**, **your recertification will be extended automatically** due to the processing freeze. No action needed! ✅

📌 However, **new IDR applications won’t be processed** at this time. Borrowers looking to switch might need to choose a temporary forbearance or fixed repayment plan.

Make sure to check your loan account and stay updated.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) is **not** affected by the recent pause on IDR applications. Borrowers can still certify employment and make qualifying payments. However, new IDR enrollments are on hold, which may create issues for some working toward PSLF.

Keep an eye out for updates and explore temporary options if needed.

Should you leave the SAVE student loan repayment plan? 🤔

For most, it's best to stay put while SAVE remains in administrative forbearance. But if you're close to PSLF, or eligible for other repayment plans, switching could be worth exploring.

If you're unsure, focus on saving while waiting for court decisions. No need to rush! 💰
