'PIA privatisation flies into corruption cloud in Pakistan'

> The privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has been sold as a big reform to end decades of losses, but the opaque deal has turned out to be an example of institutionalised corruption, according to a media report.

> [..] parked around Rs 650 billion of PIA’s historic liabilities into a holding company, which insulates the buyer from huge accumulated losses. A clean operating entity has been sold to a private consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation on a headline valuation of about Rs 135 billion, of which only around Rs 10 billion translates into actual cash inflow to the state, while the rest is injected as equity into the airline itself, the article in the Colombo-based Asian News Post observed.

> Over decades, taxpayer money built a sizeable PIA fleet, international routes, and valuable landing rights at key global hubs. Critics point out that these assets have been transferred at valuations below replacement cost, especially once adjusted for the network effects, brand value and regulatory privileges that such routes and slots confer in a congested aviation market. When the state absorbs liabilities, injects equity and then transfers these strategic assets at favourable terms to private hands, the transaction resembles a wealth transfer masked as reform rather than a fair market divestment

> "PIA’s privatisation, in its current form, is therefore less a solution than a reallocation of burdens and benefits. The public continues to service a Rs 650 billion debt burden incurred through years of political interference, leakage and mismanagement. In return, it receives limited cash, a minority equity stake, and the hope that private managers will succeed where the state failed, even though the surrounding governance ecosystem remains largely unreformed,"

Opposition Leader in the Senate, Allama Raja Abbas Nasir, announced the sit-in on Thursday after the Supreme Court (SC) was informed that PTI founder Imran Khan’s right eye had only 15 per cent vision remaining, prompting a strong response from the party.

“The peaceful protest is being staged in response to the alleged deprivation of vision in Imran Khan’s one eye, and the government’s refusal to allow access to his personal doctors and family.”

ISLAMABAD: Following the demolition of a World War I memorial in the capital, the remains of another Mughal-era building have also fallen victim to urban development.

The remains of the 16th century historical building were situated roughly 200 meters from the British-era obelisk, at an archaeological site in Rehara village.

A few days ago, the World War I memorial that stood here was razed by developers to make way for a private housing society.

According to the Department of Archaeology and Museums (DOAM), the structure was possibly built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar, and was the oldest historical ruin in this region.

A DOAM official told Dawn the building’s above-ground arch (façade) and the remaining structure (the 8x4.5 meters main chamber and its 1.5 meters thick walls), constructed with limestone and sandstone blocks, which required careful excavation, had been demolished.

Demolition comes days after British-era World War I monument was felled by developers in the same area

A departmental team that later visited the site found that the remnants of the historical structure, which are clearly visible in photographs taken earlier, had been entirely wiped out.

According to documents seen by Dawn, DOAM had written to the Capital Development Authority (CDA), which is the developing partner of the housing scheme, to provide records that would
