Time to wrap it up 🌀

In this final episode, I share the most important insights and learnings I have gained by starting The Digital Period.

After all these conversations, what does it mean to not have all the answers…but to keep asking better questions? 🤔

In this closing reflection, I look back on the whole season and offer one final thought: humility is essential. This is especially true as we continue to critically realign ourselves in a world with dynamic, ever-evolving technology.

In many cultures and parts of the world, periods are still a taboo🩸

“There's so much shame for girls when they have their first period.” - Niken Lasarati, international project manager of Oky.

In episode 6, I first spoke with Risper Onyango, a research and policy associate at the Datasphere Initiative who directed me to the period app Oky. I then met with Niken, as well as Ashley Rarieya and Mercy Nzuki, part of the team localizing Oky for Kenya.🌍

Together, we look at how tech can become a source of knowledge, dignity, and agency when it is collaboratively built with the communities that use it.

What does it mean to localize a period app?🧐This episode touches on the importance of “localization” or embedding period app technologies within specific societies or different geographic regions.

We also discuss Oky, a period-tracking app “co-created with girls, for girls”. 💅 The app was developed by UNICEF using a participatory co-creation process involving adolescent girls across several countries.

Feminist tech is not just about who’s in the room. ♀️
It’s about what kind of world we’re designing for, and how to challenge industry norms and build towards it.

In Episode 5, I spoke with two brilliant Berlin-based thinkers: Marie Kochsiek who co-founded Drip, an open-source and inclusive period app🩸; and Elisa Lindinger, co-founder of feminist tech hub Superrr Lab 🌐

Amongst all the current issues and concerns with digital surveillance and Big Tech, Episode 5 is a space for hope.

We know the problems. Now let’s plant the seeds for solutions 🌱

In Episode 5 of The Digital Period, I explore what comes after all the critique with Marie Kochsiek (co-founder of Drip, an open-source period app) and Elisa Lindinger (co-founder of feminist tech hub Superrr Lab).

Together, we discuss how to make room for possibility, care, and radical hope in our tech future.

What would technology look like if it were rooted in care, consent, and autonomy?

What does digital privacy really entail? 🤔

Is autonomy an individual right or a shared responsibility? This one’s for the philosophers - so I found four of them. 🧑‍🏫

Speaking with philosophers Marjolein Lanzing, Naomi Jacobs, and Jenneke Evers, as well as researcher Anuj Puri, we unpack what’s at stake when we give our data away, and what it means to be free in the digital age.

Episode 4 is all about Autonomy and Privacy🔏

Have you ever heard of relational autonomy? What is the social value of privacy?

“Privacy is so much more than the right to be left alone. Privacy is about the stories that we tell about ourselves. Privacy is about who we think we are.” - Anuj Puri, postdoctoral researcher at Tilburg University.

When you track your period, you get tracked too 🧭

“Trackers are basically just some pieces of software and the task is to collect a lot of data about you. So, for example, data about how you use an app, about the user, or about the smart phone you’re using” - Julia Krämer

Behind every period app is a set of choices. What kind of values do you wish your apps were built on? Let’s talk about it.

What values are built into your period app? 💭

In Episode 3 of The Digital Period, we explore how ethical and political values are (or aren’t) translated into tech design. What values do you want your tech to reflect?

I spoke with Iris Muis, project lead and data ethics expert at the Utrecht University Data School, and Julia Krämer, PhD candidate at Erasmus University to start unpacking this topic.

Are period apps worth the risk? 🔍

Period tracking can be convenient, and maybe even empowering…but it doesn’t come without risks. In Episode 2, I unpack the concept of ‘intimate surveillance’ with researchers Anastasia Siapka and Elisabetta Biasin.

Together, we discussed cases of data trading, mishandling, and other threats to privacy or security.

How do you take note of your period?✍️

In the first episode of The Digital Period, we talked about how personal and intimate period tracking can be, and how apps sometimes erase that individuality by offering pre-packaged experiences.

Do you use a period app? Or have you built your own system? I’d love to hear.

Audio Caption: "I am generally drawn to writing things on paper a lot more than I am on typing things up or putting it into my phone. And kind of coming up with my own structure as opposed to relying on this predetermined set of questionnaires and prompts that the app has" - Mana Sadeghipour

What does your period tracking app say about you? 👀

In the prologue of The Digital Period, I reflect on how period apps shape our experience of menstruation along with the assumptions, limitations and power dynamics behind it.

Why talk about period apps? 🤔

I started The Digital Period because I wanted to examine how deeply personal technologies like period tracking apps can shape our lives, our choices, and our sense of self.

These apps aren’t just tools. They’re intimate systems of measurement 📈
They collect data, reflect cultural norms, and often embed assumptions about our bodies and our needs.

In the prologue, I reflect on how this project began and why these conversations are important to reclaim agency in digital spaces.
