#FotoVorschlag: Dem Boden ganz nah // Very close to the ground

This #brownAlgae stays close to the seabed with the help of its warty, bulbous #holdfast that attaches to rocks. A fast growing, annual #seaweed, it can reach up to 4 metres in length and is found at depths of up to 35 metres. In autumn, it begins fruiting and starts to decay, with the #bulb often washing up on the #shore.

A close-up of the holdfast of Saccorhiza polyschides (a type of seaweed or kelp), lying on light-coloured sand. The holdfast is dark brown, with a rough, knobbly texture and multiple finger-like extensions radiating outward. Its surface appears slightly weathered, with grains of sand clinging to its structure. The surrounding sand is fine and pale, with a few scattered fragments of shells and debris. The image highlights the intricate, organic form of this marine organism.

#StructuralColour in the brown algal genus Sporochnus (Sporochnales, #Phaeophyceae) phys.org/news/2024-05-phycolog

"Most brown #algae are yellowish-brown, but #scuba divers noticed that a species resembling #Sporochnus shimmers like peacock feathers in yellow, bright green or blue when direct light is shone on them."
