‘80 and still free’ exhibit puts World War II battle scenes in present-day Baguio

fed.brid.gy/r/https://www.rapp

BAGUIO, Philippines – Eight decades after Allied Forces liberated Baguio City from Japanese occupation, a group of volunteers has made it their mission to ensure that the memory of that moment in history lives on not through textbooks, but through images that speak across generations.

Titled “80 and Still Free,” the upcoming exhibit set for April 21 to 27 at SM Baguio’s basement, will bring together composite photographs that juxtapose scenes from World War II with their present-day counterparts.

The images cannot capture the smell of death and destruction that the war inevitably left in its wake – of burning buildings and decomposing bodies. But by bringing the images captured on film closer to the present generation, the appreciation for how peace was attained may further motivate efforts to avoid war from happening again.

Crossover! ‘Game of Thrones’ actor Iain Glen to star in historical biopic ‘Quezon’

fed.brid.gy/r/https://www.rapp

MANILA, Philippines – The Jerrold Tarog-directed historical biopic Quezon is shaping up to be a star-studded production as Game of Thrones star Iain Glen joins its cast!

On Monday, March 17, TBA Studios announced that the Scottish actor would be playing Governor-General Leonard Wood — a casting that Tarog says makes the film “much more alive.”

“[Iain Glen] has gravitas. But at the same time, he can let loose, which is important for the role of Leonard Wood,” Tarog said about his decision to cast Glen.

Glen, who played Jorah Mormont in Game of Thrones, met with the biopic’s cast earlier this year at the Manila Hotel for a script reading.

Jericho Rosales (center), who plays Quezon in the biopic, sits beside Iain Glen (right) at a script reading.
The EDSA People Power revolution wasn’t just on Metro Manila’s main highway. That is a fact.

People Power wasn’t just about the slain former senator Ninoy Aquino. That, too, is a fact.

Aquino’s heroism is a fact.

The exiled politician came back to fight the dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos, knowing he faced grave threats.

His assassination on August 21, 1983 — in full view of the world — galvanized Filipinos.

The Marcos crony press barely uttered a squeak. But the mosquito press and word of mouth brought out two million folks at Ninoy’s funeral.

In the aftermath, rallies drew bigger crowds. Marches became multi-day events, spanning more than hundreds of kilometers. The boycott of crony firms, many fronts for the dictator’s family, worsened an economic crunch caused by grand theft and the offering of national resources for the dictator’s foreign sponsors.

Marcos felt the ground move. He called for a snap election, believing fraud and coercion could still save the day.

It wasn’t to be. Within days, Filipinos faced down tanks on EDSA. The dictator fled. Ninoy’s widow, Cory Aquino, became the country’s first woman president.

February 22 to 25, 2025 marks the 39th anniversary of the People Power Revolution, launched by the Filipino people in 1986. It served, not only to free our people from authoritarian rule, but also as a model for the international community on how to kick out a dictatorial head-of-state peacefully.

The People Power Revolution is in line with the democratic upheavals that have come in the wake of the French Revolution in the 1700s. Dynasties or royalties/monarchies, headed by kings, queens, emperors or czars, used to thrive on the canine devotion of their feudal lords who served as powerful dictatorial managers of the potentates’ vast landholdings and properties.

This feudal set-up systematized the exploitation of the common people who depended on their livelihood in the dynasties’ landholdings, or family enterprises. In other words, the masses were effectively beholden to the dynasties for their survival. It looks like our current government officials have restored this dynastic model of governance in our time.

Ferdinand E. Marcos, as dictator from 1971 to 1986, abolished Congress and made himself the sole legislator, in connivance with his defense chief Juan Ponce Enrile and with the complicity of the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine Constabulary (PC). He arrested and jailed key outspoken legislators like senators Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., Jose “Pepe” Diokno, Lore

During her commutes to the University of Santo Tomas campus in España, Aissa Domingo often passed by the National Museum, a cultural centerpiece in the capital near the famed Luneta Park and Manila Bay boardwalk.

Some time after graduating from UST, she walked into National Museum and asked for a job.

“I just walked in,” Domingo told Rappler in an online interview, recalling that day, 15 years later. Behind her stood an easel painting of Alpinia glabrescens, a flower from the ginger family.

“Nagtanong lang ako ano’ng available na position for a fine arts graduate.” (I just asked what position was available for a fine arts graduate.)

She landed a job at the Zoology Division and shared space with researchers in the museum. The Zoology Division is one of the oldest divisions in the museum, established in 1901 and managed by American ornithologist Richard Crittenden McGregor.

Her years in the museum, thus far, had been “eye-opening.”

“May niche na kailangang i-fill,” Domingo, 40, reflected. “Bakit walang gumagawa ng flora and fauna in the Philippines?”

(There’s a niche that needs to be filled. Why is there no one drawing the flora and fauna in the Philippines?)

When she started work at the museum, there was only one illustrator with a plantilla position. Fifteen years into the job, she’s the only illustrator left.

The intersection of Plazoleta Gay and Calle Ledesma, . Likely taken in the mid 1940s. Notice the intersection of cultures at this very intersection: American/ English, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Filipino. It’s also romantic: my grandma was Ledesma and my step-grandpa was Gay. It feels like I’ll always be able to find the road home.

Many people right now are commemorating the 81st anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. But I'm here to remind you that Japan also invaded the Philippines (then a commonwealth of the United States) which began one of the darkest periods in my country's history.
