Hermeticism and Shagging: Robin Norton-Hale's staging of Monteverdi's Coronation of Poppea opens the new season at English Touring Opera.
Metaphysical yet coarsely demotic, it's strong on sexual ambiguity, weak on imperial politics, and very flawed overall despite some nice singing.
My review for The Guardian:-
"Pur ti miro, pur ti godo ......"
Tatiana Troyans and Eric Tappy in the final scene of Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea, in San Francisco in 1975, conducted by Raymond Leppard.
This is Leppard's realisation of the score, which many nowadays would be deem 'inauthentic.' But this is so utterly beautiful, I don't care.
