I'm Chris, and this is my second foray into the Fediverse with a lovely little https://omg.lol identity.

I'm a father of 4, an unapologetic #space nerd, an occasional banger of the #drums, #smarthome addict, and a software engineer with 25 years experience, mostly in #python and #sql. I work as a lead staff engineer for #prefect (https://prefect.io) from my home in #maine.

After thoroughly evaluating #Prefect today - I have finally come to the conclusion, that it won't work for my usecase. It has everything I need, but managing it is not something I want to do. Too many moving parts if I decide to host the Prefect Server instead of the cloud version.

Two months into the new position and new stack. Findings:
1. #Redshift’s performance is slightly better than what it was in 2021. Still not worth the money.
2. #Prefect is the worst orchestrator one can choose for #DataEngineering purposes. It’s horrible operation-wise and lacks in terms of fundamental pillars of data engineering; example: “context/logical date” (in #Airflow speak) is absent, which means you’re limited to dumb “full refresh” jobs, unless you’re willing to backfill manually.
