I was pleased to attend the launch last week of the new open eBook: Confident Supervision – Creating Independent Researchers. Published by James Cook University, it includes the chapter I co-authored with my colleagues, Dr Sal Kleine and @stephbradbury ‘Empowering research supervisors: Developing information literacy in higher degree researchers’.

Cover of Confident Supervisors: Creating Independent Researchers. Edited by Susan Gasson; Jillian Blacker; lan Stoodley; Abbe Winter; and Christine Bruce.
Confident Supervisors is intended to be both a textbook and a professional development resource for Higher Degree Research supervisors and researcher developers involved in providing workshops and resources to support research supervisors in their practice. Throughout this book, authors introduce different theoretical frameworks and concepts to provide supervisors with tools and strategies for responding to the challenges and opportunities associated with research supervision. It contains chapters written by current supervisors and research support partners who are engaged in the scholarship of supervision and can share the practical and theoretical constructs they employ in their practice. The authors have been drawn from a broad range of higher education and research contexts and contribute understandings of local and global relevance. This openly available eBook responds to turbulent times in higher education, offering practical tips and suggestions for supervisors to pivot to changing contexts. It’s International Open Access Week 2023. #OAWeek23

During this year, I’ve been curating a collection of open access texts and journals that focus on generic and transferable research concepts, knowledge, and skills in transdisciplinary or non-discipline specific contexts.

This collection aims to support training for QUT higher degree research students and researchers and signposts openly accessible resources for those who may not have ready access to quality information after study. It sits alongside QUT Library’s training for HDR students Advanced Information Research Skills (AIRS), which is, itself, an OER. airs.library.qut.edu.au/

You can view this collection at the link below.

I’m looking for titles to add to this growing collection. Please feel welcome to send me your recommendations to add to the collection.

Thank you, Dr Sal Kleine, for sharing the love for open education resources and blogging about how we continue to support this important work through Library’s Advanced Information Research Skills (AIRS) program. The redesign of AIRS will see many changes, but our commitment to providing open access to our learning resources remains steadfast.

Highlight of my week was meeting so many of our HDR students on campus.

We welcomed QUT Higher Degree Research Students to Gardens Point campus Library for our biannual HDR Meet, Greet & Eat.

It was a great opportunity to meet #QUTLibrary discipline Liaison Librarians, Research Support specialist Librarians, and connect with peers.

Thank you to our event sponsor @digitalscience
