In terms of a Queer Craft, it is important to form a relationship with figures from queer history, and not just those within the Craft or occultism. Figures like Sappho, Oscar Wilde, Alan Turing, James Baldwin, and Edith Windsor each offer us an opportunity to forge spiritual bonds with those who helped to move the queer experience forward.

Today is the Feast Day of James Baldwin (August 2, 1924 – December 1, 1987). He was a writer and civil rights activist who gained acclaim for his 1953 novel Go Tell It on the Mountain. The following year he published his second novel, Giovanni's Room, which broached the topic of homosexuality at a time when this was still considered to be taboo. He is considered one of the most respected writers of the 20th century.

Today is Gay Warlock's Day, AKA the Feast of Paul Lynde (June 13, 1926 – January 10, 1982).

He was an American actor probably best known for his recurring role of the warlock “Uncle Arthur” in the 1960s/70s sitcom Bewitched. He was much loved, and despite his being closeted (his gayness was an open secret in Hollywood), he provided our community with some clandestine visibility at a time when it was not ok to be openly homosexual. For these reasons, this fictional gay warlock has a place on the ancestors’ altar.

Today is the Feast of Alex Sanders (June 6, 1926 – April 30, 1988), founder of the Alexandrian tradition and self-proclaimed “King of the Witches.”

While he was married to his wife Maxine, he was widely known to have had affairs with men and famously created a magical spirit using same-sex intercourse in a magical working.

Today is the Feast of Victor Anderson (May 21, 1917 – September 20, 2001)

He was the founder of American Faery witchcraft (Feri). Though he was in a loving, monogamous marriage with his wife Cora until his death, this should not erase his bisexuality. He taught the longer one worked with Faery, the more bisexual one would likely become (an assertion that is less about one's sexual preference or behavior and more of an acknowledgment of the non-gendered nature of the soul).

A traditional offering would be hot buttered tea (literally just black Lipton tea with a pat of butter added) or even Taco Bell, especially bean burritos!

Today is the Feast of Harry Hay (April 7, 1912 – October 24, 2002)

He was an early gay rights activist and founder of the Radical Faeries. He founded the Mattachine Society in 1950 when it was still illegal for homosexuals to gather in public.

My latest book, THE SATYR'S KISS, is an overarching queering of modern witchcraft, drawing from both history and myth, and that centers our lived queer experience as the heart of our spiritual lives and practices. It dares to celebrate the importance of queer sex and sex magic, and gives practices exercises for individuals, couples, and groups.
