I stumbled upon the thriller Les Chambres Rouges (Red Rooms) (2023) yesterday and decided to watch it today, because something felt different about it. That was definitely the case.
Red Rooms is a heavily atmospheric film that gives most scenes, and even cuts, the time needed to create and explore a sense of unease. And it does so with such expertise in the visuals and the sounds that I was glued to the screen the whole way through.
A thoroughly impressive film indeed.

ANATOMIE D’UNE CHUTE meets Manson Family meets Werner Herzog, der in GRIZZLY MAN in Gegenwart von Timothy Treadwells Mutter die Aufnahmen der tödlichen Bärenattacke anhört. In diesem Fahrwasser nähert sich LES CHAMBRES ROUGES dem abgrundtiefen und unvorstellbaren Grauen und schafft es, die Schwere dieses diabolischen Schreckens zu transportieren – und zwar, weil er sich eben genau nicht dieser eines Poetry-Slam ähnlichen Performance hingibt, wie sie die Staatsanwältin im Film darbietet.
Wir sehen gar nichts und hören nur wenig und wissen kaum etwas. Und doch wird der Knoten in der Magengegend immer größer…
…vielleicht, weil wir nie ganz sicher sein können, was die von Juliette Gariépy gespielte Kelly-Anne wirklich antreibt. Für mich war es das Streben danach, gesehen zu werden – nicht explizit vom Mörder, den Eltern der getöteten Kinder oder wem auch immer, sondern überhaupt gesehen zu werden. Deshalb arbeitet sie als Model – nicht, weil es gutes Geld einbringt. Sie macht im Verlauf des Films klar, dass es ihr nicht um dieses Geld geht. Stattdessen zeigt sie, dass sie wie besessen davon ist, dass die Fotos von ihr möglichst prominent platziert und breit rezipiert werden. Genauso will sie eine Reaktion des vor Gericht stehenden Mörders provozieren – nicht, weil so ein „Groupie“ ist, sondern weil er auf niemanden reagiert, niemanden eines Blickes würdigt. Aber wenn er sie (an)sehen würde, dann wäre sie besonders, dann würde sie sich endlich mal wieder fühlen.
Wer gesehen wird, kann sicher sein, dass er auch existiert…
P.S.: Ich war absolut beeindruckt davon, wie der Film die Untiefen unserer digitalen Welt erzählt. Kelly-Annes „Hacks“ werden nicht bloß mit Technobabble irgendwie zurechtgebogen, sondern die gezeigten Wege entsprechen bis zur genutzten Software weitestgehend tatsächlich verwendeten Methoden. Auch die sozialen und psychologischen Folgen einer von digitalen (Kommunikations-)Werkzeugen geprägten Welt fließen mit in die Figuren ein.
