Along with devastating cuts to numerous govt agencies and relief programs, it should come as no surprise that #DJT admin's ugly cuts to #NEA grants were coming. The severance of support to #arts charities and non profit agencies were made official last week, ending previous grant$ from the #NationalEndowment for the Arts and longstanding annual committments are effectively canceled, almost immediately.

The grant cancellations are particularly dire for arts organizations for which NEA funding may constitute the bulk of a project's budget.

In #SFBayArea , the cut$ include support for the #LGBTQ centric #Frameline #FilmFestival, #SFJAZZ, #Berkeley Rep, Women’s Audio Mission, #American Conservatory #Theater, #TheLab, San Francisco International #Arts #Festival and many many more worthy recipients. Most of these iconic and dedicated organizations will of course be able to continue their track record of creativity and community service, but will be seeking more fiscal signs of support from local sources than ever before and encourage patrons to get personally connected.

Kronos Quartet Festival 2025 - Good Medicine

Attended the Saturday evening performance on April 26 at the SFJAZZ Center, San Francisco, California

Special guests: Benedicte Maurseth (hardanger), Ariel Aberg-Riger (spoken word), and inti figgis-vizueta (Andean Whistling Jars)

Seems like a nod to Ukraine 🇺🇦 🙂 🌟

Photo of the stage and large screen above it. The stage is empty of people but all the equipment is ready to go for the performers: portable music stands, tables, chairs, and tablet computers for the musical score. The screen shows what looks like the yellow and blue striped Ukrainian flag as its background. All text is block letters. At top is text Kronos Presents (white) Kronos (yellow) Festival (white). At bottom is text Good Medicine (good is red, medicine is blue). The fonts for each word vary a bit (e.g., serif vs. sans serif).

The stage is a light brown wood. The wall behind the screen is light brown vertical slats. It is illuminated with vertical white diffuse lights, so it looks almost like the pipes of an organ.

For less than the price of a concert ticket, you can join #SFJazz from anywhere and access the entire library anytime. You also are invited to live concerts like this one. Great stills from Spike Lee’s film, When The Levees Broke, for which Mr Blanchard wrote the score.

I was very sad to hear of the death of Zakir Hussain. I must have seen him at least 20 times over the years at SF Jazz: with Shakti last year, with Chris Potter and Dave Holland, Bela Fleck, Charles Lloyd ... There were so many astonishing shows. Watching him, I always had the sense of super-human effort, transcending human frailty. I will treasure the memories of those shows always. #RIPZakirHussain #SFJazz

Absolutely beside myself, having finally seen Kid Koala's Nufonia Must Fall, met the artist, and gotten a private sneak preview of an unfinished track from the third Deltron 3030 album 🤩

Also, first time at SFJAZZ *and* they were the only venue to welcome both Nufonia Must Fall and The Storyville Mosquito (his other show), which plays next weekend -- and is a must see.

Off to #SFJAZZ to see Theon Cross and his band. Quite unusual to encounter a jazz tuba player, let alone a jazz tuba bandleader. 🎶
